YLD Executive Committee Elections

Who can run?
Each year, seven new members are elected to the YLD Executive Committee. Any voting member of the YLD is eligible for election provided that the term of office for which the individual runs shall not extend beyond his or her membership in the Division. A member is eligible if he/she is 37-years-old or less in the year 2014 or, if he/she is older than 37, not celebrating more than his/her third year of practice in 2014.

What does the Executive Committee do?
Executive Committee manages and directs the business and activities of the YLD's approximately 3,000 members, including oversight of more than 30 committees in the areas of public service, law-related education and service to the legal community. Being on the YLD Executive Committee provides lawyers opportunities for leadership, networking, and personal and professional growth early in their careers.

The Nominating Petition and Personal Statement Form must be returned to Dawn Petit, Meetings Coordinator, the Philadelphia Bar Association, 1101 Market Street, 11th Floor or via email dpetit@philabar.org, no later than 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28, 2011.

The Women's Law Caucus of Temple University Beasley School of Law needs your help!

We encourage our mentors to periodically meet with their mentees, as they see fit, in the hopes that this program will help spark meaningful and long-lasting relationships.

Our mentorship program kicks off with a Wine and Cheese Reception on Temple's campus, allowing mentors and mentees to get to know each other in a fun and informal setting. This year's Reception will be held October 20th, 2011. Doors open at 6 p.m. and Dean JoAnne Epps will make opening remarks at 6:30pm.

The Nuts and Bolts of Board Service: An Introduction to Legal Issues for Nonprofits and Their Directors Oct. 24

The program has been approved for 1.5 Substantive CLE credit. Participants wishing to receive the CLE credit will be required to pay a fee of $40.00 for members of the Philadelphia Bar Association admitted for more than five years and $35.00 for members of the Philadelphia Bar Association admitted for less than five years. Interested parties not seeking CLE credit may attend and purchase lunch through the Bar Association. If you do not want CLE credit or lunch there is no charge to attend. Volunteers Sought for LegalLine in October, November

The Young Lawyers Division is looking for sponsors and volunteers for our monthly Legal Line program for October and November. Legal Line is one of the many community service programs the YLD hosts. It takes place on the third Wednesday of every month at the Bar Association headquarters at 11th and Market Street from 5 to 8 p.m. Area residents call in for the volunteers' advice on just about any area of the law, including personal injury, domestic relations, bankruptcy, landlord-tenant and employment issues. If the caller needs further assistance after speaking with a volunteer, they are directed to the Bar Association's Lawyer Referral and Information Service.

This year, the YLD has been fortunate to have a number of sponsors for Legal Line, such as the Family Law, Criminal Justice, Real Property and State Civil Litigation Sections of the Bar Association; The Barristers' Association and APABA-PA; and the law firms Segal McCambridge Singer & Mahoney and Ciardi Ciardi & Astin. Sponsors merely need to provide between 2 and 5 volunteer attorneys to man the phones. The Bar Association will provide food and drink for the evening.

National Symposium on Diversity in Legal Profession Nov. 8

Chief legal officers, law firm managing partners, and diversity thought-leaders from across the nation will assemble for the Philadelphia Bar Association's National Symposium on Diversity in the Legal Profession on Tuesday, Nov. 8 at The Union League of Philadelphia.

The half-day symposium will begin with a luncheon featuring keynote speaker Robert J. Grey Jr., (left) executive director of the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity. Grey is a past president of the American Bar Association.

During the opening plenary, a panel of local and non-local chief legal officers and law firm managing partners will discuss the importance of collaboration to advance diversity and inclusion in the legal profession; benchmarks to measure success; and best practices for the recruitment, retention and advancement of women and diverse attorneys.

Four concurrent breakout sessions will focus on the following topics: the roles white men can play to advance diversity and inclusion in corporate legal departments and law firms; generational diversity and its impact in the workplace; successful pipeline initiatives and mentoring programs; and an employment law update. The symposium runs from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. and a VIP networking reception begins at 5:30 p.m. The VIP networking reception will provide a forum for discussion with remarks from a prominent speaker.

ABA Women Rainmakers, Understanding and Articulating Your Personal Brand Oct. 20

ABA Women Rainmakers is delighted to bring our programming to Philadelphia! Our first workshop, Understanding and Articulating Your Personal Brand, will address the role personal branding plays in a lawyer’s professional success. National Pro Bono Week Oct. 10-28

The celebration is part of the American Bar Association's coordinated national effort to encourage and support local efforts to expand the delivery of pro bono legal services.

Women in the Profession Summit on Negotiation Oct. 27

At the conclusion of the CLE, there will be a cocktail reception sponsored by the Temple Law Alumni Association and optional "speed networking event" in which attendees will spend five-minute intervals describing their practice areas before moving on to the next attendee.

The program begins at 3 p.m. in the 11th floor Conference Center of Bar Association headquarters, 1101 Market St. The program has been approved for 1.5 substantive CLE credits. The Bar Academy Presents Oktoberfest Sampling Event Oct. 26

Tom Kehoe, founder and brewmaster of Yards Brewing Company, will lead this event. Tom, the husband of Philadelphia Common Pleas Court Judge Linda Carpenter, founded Yards in 1994, making beer in a small garage-sized brewery in Manayunk. Within a few years Yards had moved to a larger facility, begun bottling its beers and introduced Philadelphia Pale Ale, which The New York Times rated as one of the best pale ales in the country. In 2008 Yards moved to its current location on Delaware Avenue which is the first 100% wind-powered brewery in Pennsylvania. Ugandan Jewish Leader to Speak Nov. 8

Kintu Moses is an outstanding leader of the Abayudaya Jewish community of Uganda. He has been director of education since 2003, and has also served as the community's acting spiritual leader. Kulanu ("All of Us" in Hebrew), founded in 1994, is a nonprofit organization which supports isolated and emerging Jewish communities around the world, many of which have been disconnected from the worldwide Jewish community.

Kintu Moses will present a dynamic multi-media program updating audiences on the Kulanu-supported Abayudaya primary and high schools, which educate and feed 700 Jewish, Muslim and Christian children studying together in peace. He will also report on the child nutrition project; public health education and women's empowerment programs; on-going classroom, library, dorm and other school construction; as well as the village micro-finance, crafts, music CD, coffee, and eco-tourism self-help projects. Kintu Moses will discuss how the Abayudaya and Kulanu are taking a leadership role in increasing literacy and nutrition, and in bringing diverse religious communities together.

YLD's Annual Harvest for the Homeless Project Kicks Off

2.) Designate your office as a drop off site for clothing, blankets and non-perishables. The YLD can provide tax forms for you to provide to those that donate.
3.) Join the YLD to sort donated clothing and goods and distribute them directly to local homeless shelters on Saturday, November 5th at Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, LLP starting at 8 am. The YLD also seeks volunteers to drive donations to shelters after sorting on Nov. 5th.
