Former New Orleans Mayor Morial to Address Bar June 30

Marc H. Morial, president and CEO of the National Urban League and former mayor of New Orleans, will deliver the Judge A. Leon Higginbotham Jr. Memorial Public Interest Lecture at the Association's Monday, June 30 Quarterly Meeting and Luncheon.

A lifelong champion of individual rights, Judge Higginbotham had a legal career that spanned nearly half a century. Since Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president of the Children's Defense Fund, delivered the first Higginbotham lecture in 1999, notables such as Juan Williams, Charles J. Ogletree, Chaka Fattah, Cornel West, Kweisi Mfume and Gwen Ifill have filled the role. New members of the Association's 50-, 60-, 65- and 70-Year Clubs will also be honored at the event. The Year Clubs recognize attorneys who have been practicing law for 50 years or more.

Morial served two distinguished four-year terms as mayor of New Orleans from 1994-2002. During that time, he also served as president of the United States Conference of Mayors in 2001 and 2002. The meeting begins at 12 p.m. at the Park Hyatt Philadelphia at the Bellevue, Broad and Walnut streets. Tickets are $55 for Association members and $60 for non members. State Civil Litigation Section Quarterly Meeting Wednesday, June 11

Join the State Civil Litigation Section tomorrow for its Quarterly Meeting featuring the topic "A New View on the Supreme Court."

The guest speaker will be the Honorable Seamus P. McCaffery, Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice.

The meeting will begin at 12:00 p.m. in the 11th Floor Conference Center of the Philadelphia Bar Association. Lunch is available for $7.50 for those members who register in advance.

Bench-Bar Annual Conference Registration Open

Registration is now open for the Association's 2008 Bench-Bar and Annual Conference on Sept. 19-21 at Bally's Atlantic City.

This year's conference is expected to bring together more than 500 lawyers and judges from the Philadelphia area for three days of CLE programming that lets practitioners and the judiciary share ideas and best practices. The theme of this year's conference is "The Sound of Philadelphia."

Registration for the full three days of the conference is $549 for those members who register by Aug. 15. That rate includes all meals and CLE. Market for 3-4 Hours Every Week by Stacy West Clark

Hi Happy Lawyers! This month’s marketing tip is: Market for 3-4 hours every week!

I hear from lawyers all the time that they are too swamped to market. But the TIME to market is when you ARE busy. It takes constant focus on your targets and referral sources to keep your name in front of them and the pipeline of work open and flowing. Does it have to be all-consuming? No. But you do need to dedicate a minimum of 3-4 hours total a week to it.

What are some things you can do very easily, quickly and regularly for these 3-4 hours? Here are some ideas.

1) Pick a day of the week to be your marketing lunch day and another to be your marketing dinner. Every week, fill these two slots with clients, targets or referral sources.

2) Use google alert and/or your librarian or assistant to scan the Internet for new news about those on your contacts list and inform you of it. Write a brief note to the "person in the news."

3) Write a one paragraph "legal tip" and email it to your contacts list each month.

4) Call a client and referral source just to "check-in" and see how their business is going.

5) Review a client's or referral source's Web site and consider how you can help them - send them a case, a client, a lead, an honor, an invitation. Do it.

6) For 5 minutes each day, think about a problem one of your clients is having and call him or her with an idea to solve it.

7) Visit your clients at their place of business. Ask for a tour. Ask how you can improve service to them in any way.

8) Volunteer to speak on something of great urgency or concern (reducing risk, exposure, legal fees, criminal exposure, tax ramifications, etc.) to a community group, business or trade group or club. Then, turn the "talk" into a short article for the group's newsletter.
