TONIGHT: YLD Joint Diversity Happy Hour and Scholarship Ceremony; Last Chance to Pre-Register for Free Drink Tickets

The Young Lawyers Division will award its "Diversity Scholarships" to five local law students at tonight's annual Joint Diversity Happy Hour and Scholarship Ceremony from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Mexican Post.

The scholarships will be awarded to: Priya De Souza of Temple's Beasley School of Law, Earthen Johnson of Drexel University Earle Mack School of Law, Samea Lim of Temple's Beasley School of Law, Maricruz Melendrez of Drexel University Earle Mack School of Law, and Jennifer Supplee of Temple's Beasley School of Law.

The event is co-hosted by the Barristers Association of Philadelphia, the Gay and Lesbian Lawyers of Philadelphia, the Hispanic Bar Association of Philadelphia, the Asian-Pacific American Bar Association of Philadelphia, and the South-Asian Bar Association of Philadelphia.

Pre-registration is encouraged as the first 200 to RSVP will be given two complimentary drink tickets for each attendee. Appetizers will also be available throughout the night.

TODAY: Conflict of Interest and Joint Representation CLE

The Pennsylvania Bar Institute, the Philadelphia Bar Association Business Law Section and Professional Responsibility Committee will present "Conflicts of Interest and Joint Representation," an interactive, 2-credit Ethics CLE today, June 16, from 12:30-2:30 p.m.

Avoiding conflicts of interest is one of the core obligations of an attorney. This program will address conflicts of interest which appear at the inception of an engagement and those that may arise later in the representation. Often, the issues arise when there is a joint representation.

Questions and the issues to be examined include: Can you represent one client against another in unrelated matters?; Can you represent a corporate client and an officer of that same client?; What do you do if your client is merged into another company and you have a matter against that company?; Can you drop one client to cure a conflict which arises after you represent both in unrelated matters?; and, Can you sue a current client?, among others.

Mock Trial Information Session, June 29

The Young Lawyers Division will host a Mock Trial Information Session on Coaching and Judging, Monday, June 29 at 12 p.m. in the Bar Association's 10th Floor Board Room. The event is co-hosted by the Temple University Beasley School of Law LEAP Program and is open to all area lawyers and law students interested in coaching and judging high school mock trial competitors in Philadelphia. A complimentary lunch will be provided.

Each year, the YLD and Temple LEAP put on a mock trial camp in the fall and the citywide John S. Bradway High School Mock Trial Competition in the spring. Philadelphia teams regularly distinguish themselves statewide and even in the national competition, which Philadelphia will proudly host in 2010!

This event will teach attendees about the commitments and rewards of getting involved. Organizers, coaches, judges, teachers and students will all be on hand to talk about their experiences and answer questions.

TOMORROW: Workers' Comp Section Hosting "Ethics: Professionalism and Propriety" CLE

The Workers' Comp Section is sponsoring a lunchtime CLE, "Ethics: Professionalism and Propriety - A New Edition of the Jack and Bill Show," tomorrow from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at the Philadelphia Bar Association's 11th Floor Conference Center.

Jack Duffy of the Law Offices of Thomas Romando and Bill McKee of the Chartwell Law Offices in Eagleville will set out, once again, on the stormy waters of ethical issues. Duffy and McKee will discuss courtroom behavior, discovery issues, surveillance, and deposition conduct among other hot topics.
