Friday, February 7, "Kids for Cash," a new critically acclaimed documentary film featuring Juvenile Law Center leaders Marsha Levick and Bob Schwartz will premiere in theaters in Philadelphia and the surrounding area. The film chronicles the infamous Luzerne County, PA "kids-for-cash" case. "Kids for Cash" is produced and directed by Robert May, who also produced the Oscar-winning documentary "The Fog of War." During the week of February 17 to 21, the University of Pennsylvania Law School will hold its Sixth Annual Public Interest Week, which celebrates the public interest work of students, alumni, and community partners and will feature student-organized presentations on topics ranging from environmental justice to indigent defense. Friday, February 21, Penn Law School Public Interest Week will culminate with the presentation of the 33rd Annual Sparer Symposium: Gender and Social Inequality: Why Women’s Rights Still Matter, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and will feature keynote speaker Marcia Greenberger, L’70, co-president of the National Women’s Law Center. Symposium panel topics include “Recognizing Problems and Sharing Solutions: Sexism in our Communities”; “Domestic Violence and its Effects on the Family”; “Women in Immigration”; and “Trafficking Women: Legal Responses to a Global Problem.” All events and program will be held at Penn Law School, 3501 Sansom Street, Philadelphia. The Sparer Symposium will offer 6 CLE Credits (2 Ethics credits). The Sparer Symposium and other program presentations offered during Public Interest Law Week at Penn Law are free and open to all. Thursday, February 27, the University of Pennsylvania Law School will hold its annual Equal Justice Foundation Auction in the Great Hall, Goat, Fitts Auditorium, Penn Law School, 3501 Sansom Street, Philadelphia. The silent auction will begin at 6:00 p.m., followed by the live auction at 8:00 p.m. Tickets cost $10 for students and $20 for non-students. Tuesday, March 4, the Mazzoni Center Legal Services will hold a benefit luncheon, Justice in Action, celebrating 5 years of legal services at Mazzoni Center, at Loews Hotel Philadelphia, 1200 Market Street, Philadelphia. At the event, EEOC Commissioner Chai R. Feldblum will be honored. Each year this event brings together legal professionals, law students, and others to raise funds for and awareness about Mazzoni Center’s Legal Services program, which provides direct legal assistance for low-income individuals facing discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
