March 28March 28, HIAS Pennsylvania and the Penn Law Immigrants’ Rights Project will present the return of "De Novo," a theatre production written and directed by Jeffery Solomon and put on by his New York City based theatre company, Houses on the Moon. The production will take place at 7 p.m., in the Penn Law Fitts Auditorium, 3501 Sansom Street and will be followed by a talk-back with the cast and local immigration advocates and cocktail reception. The play follows the story of Edgar Chocoy, a Guatemalan boy who came to the United States in search of his mother and escape from the gang in his hometown that had given the "green light" to kill him when he tried to defect. Shortly after arriving, Edgar is caught by US immigration authorities and put into deportation proceedings. Written entirely from trial transcripts, interviews and legal documents, "De Novo" shows the flaws in our current immigration legal system and the struggles young immigrants face.
