On Wednesday, February 27, Mazzoni Center will present their Fourth Annual Open Bar event to raise funds for and awareness about the agency's Legal Services, which is the only program offering free legal services tailored towards low-income LGBT individuals in Pennsylvania. The Reception will be held at the National Liberty Museum, 321 Chestnut Street, from 5:30-7:00 PM, and will feature wine, beer, soft drinks, and hearty hors d'oeuvres, along with the presentation of this year's Justice in Action Awards, as well as a special award to the Dechert LLP law firm. On Friday, March 15, the University of Pennsylvania Law School’s Toll Public Interest Center will be hosting the 32nd Annual Edward V. Sparer Symposium from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. at the University of Pennsylvania’s Law School, 3501 Sansom Street, Philadelphia, PA. The theme of this year’s event is “Entering, Living, and Leaving: Debating the Broken Door of Immigration Law.” Registration and breakfast will begin at 8:30 a.m. Lunch will be served, and a reception will be held following the Symposium. Castille, Chief Justice of Pennsylvania, will be the featured keynote speaker and will receive the Outstanding Leadership in Support of Legal Services Award. At this event, the 2013 Excellence Awards. will be presented to the award winners, which include Judy Berkman, David Trevaskis, Kerry Smith and Elizabeth Goodell. A social hour will take place from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM, immediately followed by a buffet dinner. The event will be held at the Harrisburg Hilton & Towers. March 28, HIAS Pennsylvania and the Penn Law Immigrants’ Rights Project will present the return of "De Novo," a theatre production written and directed by Jeffery Solomon and put on by his New York City based theatre company, Houses on the Moon. The production will take place at 7 p.m., in the Penn Law Fitts Auditorium, 3501 Sansom Street and will be followed by a talk-back with the cast and local immigration advocates and cocktail reception. The play follows the story of Edgar Chocoy, a Guatemalan boy who came to the United States in search of his mother and escape from the gang in his hometown that had given the "green light" to kill him when he tried to defect. Shortly after arriving, Edgar is caught by US immigration authorities and put into deportation proceedings. Written entirely from trial transcripts, interviews and legal documents, "De Novo" shows the flaws in our current immigration legal system and the struggles young immigrants face. On April 11, The Homeless Advocacy Project (HAP) will hold its Annual April Benefit event from 5:30 to 8:00 PM. The event will be held at the Sofitel, and will feature cocktails and hors d’oeuvres along with a silent and live auction. All proceeds received that evening will support HAP’s mission to provide free civil legal services to Philadelphia’s homeless and shelter population. The event draws more than 250 people including business and legal professionals who work in and around greater Philadelphia. Since 1990, HAP has provided $45 million in legal assistance to more than 32,000 clients. Tickets cost $100 each.
