Job Announcement: Director of Communications and Marketing

INTRODUCTION

The Philadelphia Bar Association is seeking a Director of Communications and Marketing. This individual will have overall responsibility for external communications, public affairs and marketing for the Association. Founded in 1802, the Association is the oldest association of lawyers in the United States. It is devoted to serving the interests of its 13,000 members and to improving access to justice for the Philadelphia community.

DUTIES

Significant responsibilities include:

  • Serving as the Bar Association's creative director, generating ideas, suggesting strategies, devising themes and maintaining creative control over the public relations and marketing process and all of its components;

  • Developing public relations campaigns and campaign components; generating story ideas;

  • Overseeing media relations, including media events; arranging meetings, where appropriate, with members of the news media; and maintaining the Association's Media Assistance and Resource Service;

  • Preparing news releases, speeches, columns, op-eds, articles and marketing copy;

  • Directing the Association's overall marketing strategy to increase membership retention and recruitment through marketing campaigns, including digital/social media campaigns;

  • Directing an in-house Communications Department, reporting to the Executive Director;

  • Advising the Bar leaders regarding issues, media strategies, public opinion, etc. and, where appropriate, suggesting action; monitoring stories in the newspaper, on radio and television, and in digital communications, suggesting strategies for response where appropriate;

  • Administering community relations and community outreach

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong written and oral communication skills; ability to grasp and interpret legal concepts and issues impacting the effective delivery of justice;

  • Relevant marketing experience in the non-profit or corporate sector;

  • High personal integrity, sound judgment and a strong work ethic are essential, together with energy, imagination and a passion for telling the "story" of the Association;

  • Bachelor's degree in a communications-related area of study required. Advanced degree useful but not a prerequisite.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

An attractive compensation package will be offered, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
