Town Hall Meeting on Impact of Same-Sex Marriage Rulings, June 27

The Philadelphia Bar Association's LGBT Rights Committee will hold a Town Hall Meeting, "How the United States Supreme Court Marriage Decisions Impact You," on Thursday, June 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the William Way LGBT Community Center, 1315 Spruce St., in Philadelphia. The event is co-sponsored by the Mazzoni Center.

On Wednesday, June 26, the U.S. Supreme Court will issue what are expected to be historic rulings on same-sex marriage.

The Court will decide if the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) violates the U.S. Constitution's guarantee of equal protection for people of the same sex who are legally married under the laws of their state.

The justices will also decide if the state of California can define marriage as the union of only a man and a woman without violating the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. The case challenges the constitutionality of California's Proposition 8. The proposition passed in 2008 to amend the state constitution to limit marriage to same-sex couples. The case challenges the proposition on equal protection and due process grounds.

Panelists for the Town Hall Meeting will include Rebecca G. Levin and Michael L. Viola, Co-Chairs of the Philadelphia Bar Association's LGBT Rights Committee; Leonore F. Carpenter, Assistant Professor of Law at Temple University Beasley School of Law; Tiffany Palmer, Shareholder at Jerner & Palmer, P.C.; and David M. Rosenblum, Legal Director of the Mazzoni Center
