Susanna Foo, Chef/Owner of Susanna Foo Chinese Cuisine, will be the distinguished guest speaker at a naturalization ceremony, to be held in the Ceremonial Courtroom of the U.S. District Court, 6th & Market Streets, Thursday, August 16 at 10:30 a.m.

Foo, a naturalized citizen and a native of Taiwan, arrived in the United States in 1967. She graduated from the University of Pittsburgh and in 1979 came to Philadelphia and joined her husband's family restaurant business. She enrolled in the Culinary Institute of America and in 1987 Foo and her husband opened their own restaurant, Susanna Foo Chinese Cuisine. Two years later, Foo was named one of America's ten best new chefs by Food & Wine Magazine, and for the following six years the restaurant was voted among the five most popular in Philadelphia by Zagat Restaurant Survey. Foo's first cookbook, Susanna Foo Chinese Cuisine, was published in 1995 and has received numerous reviews. In addition to many awards and accomplishments, Foo became the first Pennsylvanian to win the coveted James Beard Foundation Award for Best Chef Mid-Atlantic Region in 1997. Her restaurant was recognized by The Philadelphia Inquirer in 1998 with the first four-bell rating in Philadelphia. Most recently, the restaurant was awarded the AAA four-diamond and the Mobil four-star awards.

Judge Anita B. Brody of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania will preside over the ceremony.

Remarks on behalf of  the Philadelphia Bar Association will be offered by Jerel Hopkins, Esq., of the Association's Young Lawyers Division. Motions will be presented by Norman McCall, District Adjudications Officer, and Aida Ayala, Deputy Clerk, will administer the oath.  A response to the Court on behalf of the new citizens will be announced.

Approximately 50 new citizens from 25 different countries will become naturalized.
