Beccaria Bust Ceremony June 28

Members of the Bar are invited to a ceremony on Thursday, June 28 at 4 p.m. in the Jury Assembly Room of the Criminal Justice Center at 13th and Filbert Streets, in which a bust of Cesare Beccaria will be formally presented to the court system. The bust will be permanently installed in the Jury Assembly Room. Judges of the Court of Common Pleas and Municipal Court and representatives of The Justinian Society and the Philadelphia Bar Association will be in attendance. RSVP is not required. For more information, contact Michael C. Rainone at 215-557-7066.

Cesare Beccaria, an 18th century Italian scholar, was an early proponent of many of the tenets of modern criminal law. His visionary work is credited with aiding the subsequent European penal code reform and the eventual development of the American criminal justice system. The bust of Beccaria was unveiled Nov. 9 at the Beccaria Award ceremony, co-sponsored by the Philadelphia Bar Association's Criminal Justice Section and The Justinian Society.
