March 15 Panel to Focus on Family Planning

Congressman James C. Greenwood (R-PA) will be one of the panelists at a special program sponsored by the YWCA of Philadelphia and the Women's Rights Committee of the Philadelphia Bar Association, in cooperation with the Population Resource Center, on Thursday, March 15, 2001, at 5:00 p.m., at the Philadelphia Bar Education Center, on the 10th Floor of the Wanamaker Building, 100 Penn Square East, in Philadelphia. The session will also feature Pennsylvania State Representative Babette Josephs (D-182) and Dr. Sue Ellen Miller, Project Director of Expanding Contraceptive Choice.

Entitled "Meeting the Needs of Women Worldwide: Contraceptive Coverage and International Family Planning," the program will discuss proposed state and federal legislation designed to ensure equitable coverage of prescription contraceptive drugs. According to the Women's Research and Education Institute, women pay 68 percent more than their male counterparts in out-of-pocket health expenses during their child bearing years. Although Medicaid typically covers contraceptives, many private insurance plans do not. Thirteen states have now enacted legislation to guarantee insurance coverage of reversible contraception.

According to conference planners, on a global level 585,000 women die and at least seven million suffer health consequences due to the complications of pregnancy and childbirth. This discussion of contraception coverage and access from a local to global perspective is designed to be timely and informative. Those interested in attending this free program should reserve a place at the event by March 9, by calling the YWCA of Philadelphia at 215-790-9006, or e-mailing ywcaphil@bellatlantic.net.
