Frank Cervone Wins Philadelphia Bar Foundation Award
Frank Cervone, who has served as executive director of the Support Center for Child Advocates for 14 years, was named the winner of the 2006 Philadelphia Bar Foundation Award in a ceremony immediately preceding the annual Andrew Hamilton Gala on Nov. 4 at 30th Street Station.
The Philadelphia Bar Foundation Award is given annually to an attorney working in the non profit legal services community. Cervone leads an organization that offers free legal and social services to Philadelphias abused and neglected children. The Support Center for Child Advocates was founded in 1977.
Im privileged to be a part of a fine organization. We will celebrate our 30th year this February, Cervone said, and the Bar Foundation donors make our work possible.
A graduate of Villanova University School of Law, Cervone served as general counsel for the Support Center prior to being named executive director.
A resident of Hartsville in Bucks County, Pa., Cervone serves as vice chair of the Childrens Trust Fund and a member of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania Juvenile Court Procedural Rules Committee. He has recently chaired the Advisory Committee on Child Welfare Services and served as a member of the Advisory Committee on Adoption Law of the Joint State Government Commission, the research arm of the Pennsylvania General Assembly. He is a member of the Board of the Philadelphia Childrens Alliance and member of the American Bar Association Section of Litigation Childrens Rights Litigation Committee Working Group.
He is a founder and co-director of the National Childrens Law Network. He was recognized as a Pennsylvania Superlawyer by Philadelphia Magazine in 2004, 2005 and 2006, and he received the 2004 Signum Fidei Award from La Salle University. Cervone was honored by Villanova University School of Law with the 2001 Donald W. Dowd Alumni Association Award for Public Service, by Rutgers-Camden Law School with the 2000 Mary Philbrook Public Interest Award, and by the Philadelphia Bar Association Committee on the Legal Rights of Lesbians and Gay Men with the 2001 Advocate for Justice Award. He received the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division Child Advocacy Law Award in August 1998, and in 1997, he received the St. Thomas More Award, presented by the St. Thomas More Society of Philadelphia.
Cervone is married to Judith A. Algeo, chair of the Board of Supervisors of Warwick Township and the president-elect of the Bucks County Bar Association.
Founded in 1964 as the charitable arm of the Philadelphia Bar Association devoted to the support of legal services agencies, the Philadelphia Bar Foundation's mission is to promote access to justice for all of our fellow citizens in the region, particularly those struggling with poverty, abuse and discrimination. The Foundation provides grants and technical assistance to legal services organizations that have demonstrated both a need for financial support and an effective program for assisting clients.
