PHILADELPHIAKassem L. Lucas, an associate in Pepper Hamilton LLPs Commercial Insurance and Reinsurance practice group, will receive the Craig M. Perry Service Award at the Philadelphia Bar Association Young Lawyer Divisions Annual Meeting Feb. 22 at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel.
The award is presented annually to a young lawyer who has devoted substantial time and energy to community-oriented activities, including, but not limited to, pro bono and charity work. Perry was a member of the YLD Executive Committee who suffered an untimely death. He was very involved in community service and active in working on student-related and other YLD programs.
Lucas has coached a high school mock trial team for several years, serving as a role model for minority public high school students. He meets with students in the evenings and weekends to coach them in their trial advocacy skills. Last year, his team made it to the state championships in Harrisburg.
A 2000 graduate of Temple Universitys Beasley School of Law, Lucas also has mentored a Philadelphia Futures student, which involves significant financial and time commitments to an underprivileged high school student. He serves on the board of the Boys and Girls Club of Philadelphia and is the President of the Young Friends of the Boys and Girls Club. He has also participated in Martin Luther King Day workshops.
In addition to his work for Pepper Hamilton LLPs fee-paying clients, Lucas is committed to pro bono work, and has represented clients in child custody and support matters and employment cases. Following graduation from Yale University, he returned to his high school alma mater, George School, where he served as a teacher, coach and administrator. He continues to serve that boarding school in Bucks County as a member the George School's Committee, which is the schools Board of Directors.
Michael Stiles, Vice President of the Philadelphia Phillies and former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, will be the keynote speaker for the YLD annual meeting, which begins at noon.
