Juntos Co-Founder Peter Bloom to Speak on Mexican Government Repression Aug. 2

The Philadelphia Bar Association's Civil Rights Committee is hosting a discussion on "Government Repression and the Popular Movement in Oaxaca, Mexico" on Thursday, August 2, at noon, in the 11th Floor Conference Center of the Philadelphia Bar Association, 1101 Market Street.

In May 2006, teachers in Oaxaca, Mexico went out on strike to demand better conditions for themselves and their students. The teachers' strike was met by brutal police action. The police response widened the conflict and gave birth to a community-based social movement. This mass movement continues to press for a broad set of political and social demands, amidst police repression that has left over 100 people "disappeared," and many others imprisoned. International human rights groups have condemned the repression, while the conflict threatens to topple the local government.

Hear Peter Bloom, Executive Director and Co-Founder, JUNTOS, discuss the current situation in Oaxaca.

JUNTOS, a Philadelphia-based grassroots group, works to build power for justice with the city's Latino immigrant communities.

Registration is available here.
