RESOLUTION TO RECOGNIZE THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF VILLANOVA UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LAW

WHEREAS, Villanova University, an institution of higher learning located in the western suburbs of Philadelphia since the 1840's, created a law school in 1953;

WHEREAS, the mission statement of the Villanova University School of Law states that it is a community that seeks to engage in the "cultivation of knowledge, the pursuit of excellence, by respect for individual differences, and by adherence to the principle that mutual love and respect should animate every aspect of the law school's life;"

WHEREAS, from its creation in 1953, Villanova University School of Law was co-educational at a time when women were not admitted to many law schools;

WHEREAS, Villanova University School of Law welcomes all to its community, regardless of race, gender, religion or creed, sexual orientation, national or ethnic origin, age, economic status, or disability;

WHEREAS, Villanova University School of Law has stated publicly its commitment to the values of critical, searching inquiry and open debate, and its dedication to providing a forum for principled engagement with ideas of all kinds, in an atmosphere of civil expression and mutual respect;

WHEREAS, very soon after its creation, Villanova University School of Law was accredited by the American Bar Association and awarded a chapter of the Order of the Coif, a national honor society devoted to the encouragement of standards in legal scholarship;

WHEREAS, Villanova University School of Law is committed to instill in its students emphasis on honesty, integrity, and responsibility, with particular attention to dedication to social justice, human rights, and the value of pro bono service to the poor, both as students and as lawyers and through its faculty, students, alumni, and highly regarded clinical programs has provided pro bono services;

WHEREAS, Villanova University School of Law has been a leading law school in the Philadelphia legal community for 50 years, with its graduates serving as distinguished members of the bench, bar, and academia, in leadership roles in many bar and professional associations, including the Philadelphia Bar Association, and has made many valuable contributions to the Philadelphia legal community;

WHEREAS, September 13, 2003 will mark the 50th Anniversary of the First Day of classes for Villanova Law School;

WHEREAS, the 50th anniversary of the opening of Villanova Law School will be commemorated by an academic convocation at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Philadelphia Bar Association hereby recognizes the accomplishments of Villanova University School of Law, its faculty, staff, students, and alumni over the last 50 years, and congratulates Villanova University School of Law on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.
