RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF JUSTICE SANDRA SCHULTZ NEWMAN

WHEREAS, the Honorable Sandra Schultz Newman graduated from Drexel University in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science, received a Master of Arts from Temple University in 1969, earned her law degree from Villanova University Law School in 1972, at a time when women law students were few, and received honorary Doctor of Laws degrees from Widener University Law School, Gannon University, and Drexel University;

WHEREAS, Justice Newman has been a leader in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania throughout her professional life, which began as an assistant district attorney, followed by a distinguished career as a matrimonial lawyer, with service thereafter as an elected Judge of the Commonwealth Court, culminating in 1995 with her election as the first elected female Justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court;

WHEREAS, Justice Newman has been the Pennsylvania Supreme Court’s liaison to the First Judicial District of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania since 2002, and in that capacity has devoted careful attention to the issues facing Philadelphia's courts and has contributed enormously to helping Philadelphia achieve a fair and efficient judicial system, with improved access to justice for all citizens;

WHEREAS, December 31, 2006 will mark Justice Newman’s retirement from the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Philadelphia Bar Association hereby recognizes the extraordinary accomplishments of Madame Justice Sandra Schultz Newman during her distinguished tenure as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, and expresses gratitude her for her valuable service to the Philadelphia court system and to the entire unified judicial system of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
