RESOLUTION COSPONSORING THE AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION'S RECOMMENDATIONS REGARDING ADEQUATE COMPENSATION FOR STATE AND LOCAL JUDGES
WHEREAS, the Philadelphia Bar Association is committed to the attraction and retention of qualified and diverse state and local judges;
WHEREAS, adequate salaries are important to attract and retain competent and qualified people to serve on the judiciary;
WHEREAS, independence is necessary in determining judicial compensation;
WHEREAS, salaries of state and local judges are inequitable and inadequate in comparison to the opportunities available in the private sector;
WHEREAS, the inadequacy in salaries is a deterrent to qualified lawyers seeking to become state and local judges;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Philadelphia Bar Association joins as cosponsor and supports the American Bar Association's recommendations regarding judicial compensation, which will be submitted to the ABA House of Delegates for consideration at the 2003 Annual Meeting.
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Chancellor is hereby authorized to communicate this position to appropriate government officials and others.
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Philadelphia Bar Association's ABA Delegates are hereby authorized to communicate this position at the ABA 2003 Annual Meeting.
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that any specific proposal to implement this recommendation in Pennsylvania be approved by the Board of Governors before any such proposal receives the support of this Association.
