RESOLUTION ADOPTING THE RECOMMENDATION OF THE PRO BONO TASK FORCE TO INCREASE LAW SCHOOL PARTICIPATION IN PRO BONO SERVICES

WHEREAS, in December 2001, Philadelphia Bar Association Chancellor Allan Gordon empanelled a Pro Bono Task Force to comprehensively evaluate the need for, and the delivery of, pro bono legal services to the needy, disadvantaged and disenfranchised in Philadelphia;

WHEREAS, the Pro Bono Task Force, after extensive research and investigation, submitted a Report, including Findings and Recommendations ("the Report") to the Board of Governors on June 27, 2002;

WHEREAS, the Board of Governors, after discussion and upon oral motion made and duly seconded, accepted the Report for comment and study;

WHEREAS, the Pro Bono Task Force recommended law schools increase their participation and leadership role in pro bono service;

WHEREAS, the Board of Governors recognizes the valuable contribution law schools can make to pro bono.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Philadelphia Bar Association approves, accepts and supports this recommendation and will seek to develop relationships between Bar Association leadership and leadership of area law schools.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Bar Association will be available to assist area law schools in developing, creating and implementing more clinical programs for students to provide pro bono service, including expanding opportunities in areas such as business transactions, domestic relations, and estates and trusts.

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Bar Association will encourage law schools to permit the Bar Association to participate in orientation for incoming students so as to communicate pro bono opportunities that are available.
