WHEREAS, in December 2001, Philadelphia Bar Association Chancellor Allan Gordon empanelled a Pro Bono Task Force to comprehensively evaluate the need for, and the delivery of, pro bono legal services to the needy, disadvantaged and disenfranchised in Philadelphia;
WHEREAS, the Pro Bono Task Force, after extensive research and investigation, submitted a Report, including Findings and Recommendations ("the Report") to the Board of Governors on June 27, 2002;
WHEREAS, the Board of Governors, after discussion and upon oral motion made and duly seconded, accepted the Report for comment and study;
WHEREAS, the Pro Bono Task Force recommended the Bar Association encourage the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to adopt and promote an aspirational and measurable 50 hour annual standard of pro bono participation;
WHEREAS, the Board of Governors recognizes the importance of encouraging and increasing the number of hours devoted to pro bono service;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Philadelphia Bar Association approves, accepts and supports this recommendation and the Bar leadership will initiate preliminary communications with the Pennsylvania Supreme Court regarding the adoption and promotion of an aspirational 50 hour annual standard of pro bono participation.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Bar leadership will solicit county bar associations in Pennsylvania for opinions and support as well as encourage the Pennsylvania Bar Association to promote the enactment of this aspirational goal.PHILADELPHIA BAR ASSOCIATION
