Governor Rendell signed into a law on Nov. 30 a measure that ensures that people who do not speak English as a primary language will have access to interpreters in legal proceedings.

Business Law Section Seeks Replansky Nominees
The Business Law Section is seeking nominations from the Philadelphia legal community for the Section's 2006 Dennis H. Replansky Memorial Award. The award will be presented at the Section's Annual Reception to be held on Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007 at the Pyramid Club. The award recipient will receive the privilege of designating the recipient of the Section's annual charitable contribution to a public interest organization. Award criteria are:
Superior legal talent in the area of business law.
Unique contributions to and significant achievements within the business law community in the Philadelphia area.
A reputation for mentoring young attorneys.
Significant participation in and contributions to civic and charitable causes in the community.
Uniform recognition in the legal community of the candidate's honesty, integrity and professionalism.
Each candidate must be a member of the Philadelphia Bar Association's Business Law Section.
The Section established the award in recognition of Replansky's career as a lawyer and his contributions to legal, civic, religious and other charitable causes. Replansky was a 51-year-old senior partner at Blank Rome LLP when he died in March 1994. He was a former chair of the Business Law Section.

Brandeis Society Hanukkah Party Dec. 14
The Louis D. Brandeis Law Society will present its annual Benjamin F. Levy Community Service Award to Harris T. Bock at the Society's annual Hanukkah Party on Thursday, Dec. 14 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Top of the Tower, 1717 Arch St., 51st Floor.
The party, which celebrates the Jewish Festival of Lights, will include a menorah lighting and food and drink. The event concludes the Society's yearlong observance of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Justice Louis D. Brandeis, the first Jewish justice of the United States Supreme Court.
The Benjamin F. Levy Community Service Award perpetuates the memory and legacy of the late Ben Levy who practiced law in Philadelphia for 35 years, winning the respect and affection of many friends, clients and colleagues. He was a member of the Executive Committee of Tau Epsilon Rho (TER) which later became the Brandeis Law Society. He was also a member of the Board of Governors of the Philadelphia Bar Association and was very active in the community.
Tickets for the Hanukkah Party are $50 for Brandeis Society members and $60 for non-members. Special ticket prices are $15 for member law students and member young lawyers (less than two years in practice) and $25 for public service members.

Carter, Esq., the Bar Association's Staff Counsel, to obtain a copy of a Judicial Evaluation Questionnaire and a copy of the Commission's guidelines and bylaws.
