Vice Chancellor, Board Candidates Forum Today at 12

Candidates for Bar Association offices will be appearing at a Candidate's Forum today (Thursday, Nov. 16) in the 11th floor Conference Center of Bar Association headquarters, 1101 Market St.

Members will select among the following candidates: Vice Chancellor, Alexander Kerr and Sayde J. Ladov; Secretary, John E. Savoth; Treasurer, Scott F. Cooper; Assistant Secretary, Kathleen D. Wilkinson; Assistant Treasurer, Jeffrey M. Lindy; Board of Governors (elect five), Gaetan J. Alfano, Karen L. Detamore, Natalie Klyashtorny, Michael B. Hayes, Wesley R. Payne, Rosemary Pinto, Jacqueline G. Segal and Shelley R. Smith.

Dalton to Outline 2007 Agenda at Dec. 5 Annual Meeting

Bar members are encouraged to reserve their seats early for the Association's Annual Meeting Luncheon set for Tuesday, Dec. 5 at the Park Hyatt Philadelphia at the Bellevue, Broad and Walnut streets. During the event, Association Chancellor-Elect Jane L. Dalton, a partner with Duane Morris LLP, will outline her agenda for next year when she will serve as the Bar's 80th Chancellor. The luncheon will be held in conjunction with the Association's Annual Election of Vice Chancellor, Bar officers, members of the Board of Governors and the Young Lawyers Division Executive Committee. The election will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the ballroom level of the Park Hyatt Philadelphia, Broad and Walnut streets. Those members who wish to vote by mail must have their ballots received (not postmarked, but received) at Bar Association headquarters by 10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 30. Ballots received after that time will not be counted. Anyone not returning their ballot in a timely fashion may still vote in person on Dec. 5 at the Park Hyatt. Ballots will be mailed to members on Nov. 17.

Brown, Silver to Receive Wachovia Fidelity Award

Stephen D. Brown, a partner at Dechert LLP, and Samuel W. Silver, a partner at Schnader Harrison Segal & Lewis LLP, will be honored with the Association's Wachovia Fidelity Award at the Dec. 5 Annual Meeting Luncheon at the Park Hyatt Philadelphia.

The Wachovia Fidelity Award is presented annually by the Association to individuals who have helped improve the administration of justice and exhibited faithfulness to the profession.

Brown and Silver have been co-coordinators of the Prisoner Civil Rights Panel for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania since 1993. Brown is currently the chair of Dechert's Prisoner Civil Rights Pro Bono Practice Group, which he created more than a decade ago. Brown was presented in 2003 with Dechert's Samuel E. Klein Pro Bono Award, which is awarded annually to the firm's lawyers who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to pro bono legal services. Silver, chair of Schnader's Litigation Department, received the firm's Earl G. Harrison Award in 2000 for his distinguished record of public service.

Notice to Potential Judicial Candidates

The Commission on Judicial Selection and Retention of the Philadelphia Bar Association evaluates the qualifications of persons wishing to join the judiciary.

Individuals who are filing for the 2007 primary election as judicial candidates for the Philadelphia Common Pleas or Municipal Courts should contact the Commission on Judicial Selection & Retention c/o Areetha M. Carter, Esq., the Bar Association's Staff Counsel, to obtain a copy of a Judicial Evaluation Questionnaire and a copy of the Commission's guidelines and bylaws. Please return the completed questionnaire to Judicial Commission at 1101 Market St., 11th Floor, Philadelphia, PA 19107-2911.

Candidates who have previously been evaluated by the Commission are invited to contact the Association to determine whether their ratings are current by contacting Ms. Carter at acarter@philabar.org or (215) 238-6351.

The Commission will complete all ratings for candidates running in the 2007 primary by Jan. 31, 2007; therefore, in order to ensure that each candidate receives a full and fair evaluation, no questionnaires will be accepted for evaluation after Dec. 15, 2006. Individuals are reminded that under the Commission's Guidelines, any candidates who do not participate in the Commission's evaluation process will receive "Not Recommended" ratings.

125 Firms Raise Nearly $1.5 Million for Legal Services

With the addition of the Law Offices of Christy Adams; Badey, Sloan and DiGenova; Law Offices of Lenard A. Cohen, P.C.; German, Gallagher and Murtagh, P.C.; Peter Hearn, P.C.; and Larry Pitt and Associates, 125 firms have pledged nearly $1.5 million in support of Chancellor Alan M. Feldman's Raising the Bar Campaign to support legal services.

The 125 law firms, representing more than 4,600 attorneys, have pledged $1,470,170. The Raising the Bar Campaign is a joint effort by the Philadelphia Bar Association and the Philadelphia Bar Foundation to increase funding for Philadelphia public interest law centers.

Each firm made a pledge of at least $300 per attorney in its Philadelphia office, with a number of firms committing to as much as $500. To contribute, contact Maureen Mingey, Executive Director of the Philadelphia Bar Foundation.

Bankruptcy Committee to Consider Amicus Participation

Matthew A. Hamermesh and Scott F. Waterman will discuss their involvement in seeking the Philadelphia Bar Association's participation as an amicus curiae in pending litigation concerning the constitutionality of the attorney liability provisions of BAPCPA at the Thursday, Nov. 16 meeting of the bankruptcy Committee.

Koc to Discuss NAWL Survey Nov. 28

Lorraine Koc, vice president and general counsel of Deb Shops, Inc. and immediate past president of the National Association of Women Lawyers will be the guest speaker at the Tuesday, Nov. 28 meeting of the Women in the Profession Committee.

Koc will discuss the results of the NAWL survey that demonstrates that despite the fact that women have comprised more than 50 percent of law school graduates for more than 15 years, these numbers have not translated into corresponding numbers of equity partners at law firms.

YLD Seeks Harvest for the Homeless Volunteers

The Young Lawyers Division is seeking volunteers for its annual Harvest for the Homeless program. Volunteers are needed to assist with sorting and distributing donated items on Saturday, Nov. 18. Minority Bars to Hold Candidates Forum Nov. 20

The Asian American Bar Association of the Delaware Valley, Barristers' Association of Philadelphia, Inc., Hispanic Bar Association of Pennsylvania and South Asian Bar Association of Philadelphia will hold a candidates forum for candidates for elected positions in the Philadelphia Bar Association on Monday, Nov. 20.

Judge Shapiro, Shestack to be Honored at Nov. 30 Reception

A reception for U.S. District Court Senior Judge Norma L. Shapiro and former ABA President Jerome J. Shestack will highlight the Pennsylvania Bar Association's "Tour de Pennsylvania" stop at the Philadelphia Marriott, 1201 Market St., beginning at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 30.

Shapiro recently received the ABA's 2006 John Marshall Award in recognition of her exemplarily lifelong commitment to the improvement of the administration of justice in the categories of judicial independence, justice system reform and public awareness regarding the justice system.

Shestack recently received a 2006 ABA Medal, the association's highest recognition to honor individuals rendering exceptionally distinguished service to the cause of American jurisprudence.

During the evening, PBA President Ken Horoho Jr. also will lead a presentation about top issues facing lawyers today.

Initiated by Horoho, "Tour de Pennsylvania" is a series of outreach programs being held across the state to honor select members of the bench and the bar and to update lawyers about PBA initiatives. To register, contact the PBA Meetings Department at 800-932-0311, Ext. 2245.

Sections, YLD Plan Annual Events

The Association's Sections and Young Lawyers Division have announced plans for their annual year-end events. Visit philadelphiabar.org for registration information as it becomes available.

The Probate and Trust Section will hold its annual meeting and CLE program at The CLE Conference Center on the 10th floor of the Wanamaker Building on Tuesday, Nov. 28.

The Young Lawyers Division Annual Holiday Party will be held Thursday, Nov. 30 at Cuba Libre, 10 S. 2nd St. The event is sponsored by Dechert.

The Workers' Compensation Annual Reception will be held Tuesday, Dec. 5 at the Pyramid Club on the 51st floor of 1735 Market St. The Section will present its annual Martha Hampton Award at the event.

The Public Interest Section will hold a daylong CLE program on Wednesday, Dec. 6. The day's events will be capped with the Section's Annual Cocktail Reception and presentation of the Andrew Hamilton Award at 5 p.m. at Loews Philadelphia Hotel, 1200 Market St.

The Family Law Section Annual Dinner takes place on Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 5:30 p.m. at Maggiano's Little Italy, 12th and Filbert streets.

The Tax Section annual meeting and reception will be held Thursday, Dec. 7 beginning at 3 p.m. at the Rittenhouse Hotel, 210 W. Rittenhouse Square.

The State Civil Litigation Section Annual Holiday Reception will be held Tuesday, Dec. 12 at 5:30 p.m. at the Westin Philadelphia, 99 S. 17th St.

The Criminal Justice Section Annual Reception will be held Thursday, Dec. 14 at Loews Philadelphia Hotel.

Business Law Section Seeks Replansky Nominees

The Business Law Section is seeking nominations from the Philadelphia legal community for the Section's 2006 Dennis H. Replansky Memorial Award. The award will be presented at the Section's Annual Reception to be held on Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007 at the Pyramid Club. The award recipient will receive the privilege of designating the recipient of the Section’s annual charitable contribution to a public interest organization. Award criteria are:

Superior legal talent in the area of business law.

Unique contributions to and significant achievements within the business law community in the Philadelphia area.

A reputation for mentoring young attorneys.

Significant participation in and contributions to civic and charitable causes in the community.

Uniform recognition in the legal community of the candidate’s honesty, integrity and professionalism.

Each candidate must be a member of the Philadelphia Bar Association's Business Law Section.

The Section established the award in recognition of Replansky's career as a lawyer and his contributions to legal, civic, religious and other charitable causes. Replansky was a 51-year-old senior partner at Blank Rome LLP when he died in March 1994. He was a former chair of the Business Law Section.

Barristers' Thanksgiving Drive Nov. 18

The Barristers' Association will hold its 22nd annual Thanksgiving Drive on Saturday, Nov. 18 at the Cozen PAL Center at the corner of North 17th and Brown streets.

The Barristers contact area churches for the names of African-American families that need support during Thanksgiving. During last year's Thanksgiving Drive residents of the community as well as churches were able to pick-up Thanksgiving baskets from a centralized location. The Thanksgiving "baskets" contain turkeys, stuffing, vegetables, cranberry sauce, rolls, dessert, and more.

Last year, the Barristers provided "baskets" to more than 400 African-American families in the Philadelphia area. The Barristers' Association is also looking for volunteers to help deliver the baskets to the selected families on the day of the Thanksgiving Drive. The Women's Law Project will host its Annual Party on Friday, Dec. 1 from 5:45 to 8 p.m. at the Marketplace Design Center, 2400 Market St.
