Garcia to Outline 2011 Plans at Dec. 7 Annual Meeting

The Philadelphia Bar Association's Annual Meeting Luncheon, featuring inaugural remarks from incoming Chancellor Rudolph Garcia of Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC, will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 7 at 12 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom of the Hyatt at The Bellevue, Broad and Walnut streets.

The event will also feature the presentation of the Justice William J. Brennan Jr. Distinguished Jurist Award and the Wells Fargo Fidelity Award. Click here to purchase tickets.

Election of officers and members of the Board of Governors will also be held on Tuesday, Dec. 7, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the Ballroom Level of the Hyatt at The Bellevue. Officers to be elected are Vice Chancellor, Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Secretary, Assistant Treasurer and five members of the Board of Governors for three-year terms.

Ballots will be mailed on Thursday, Nov. 18, and must be received at the offices of the Philadelphia Bar Association, 1101 Market St., 11th Floor, by 10 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 2.

Bar Association Candidates Forums Nov. 16, Nov. 18

All members of the Philadelphia Bar Association are invited to attend two Candidates Forums to hear from candidates seeking offices in the Association's 2010 Annual Election.

The forums, sponsored by the Association’s Elections Committee, will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 16 at 12 p.m. (featuring Vice Chancellor and officer candidates) and Thursday, Nov. 18 at 12 p.m. (featuring Board of Governors candidates).

The forums will be held in the 11th floor Conference Center of Bar Association headquarters, 1101 Market St. Lunch is available for $4 for those members who register in advance; or, bring a brown-bag lunch. The forums will be moderated by Elections Committee Chair and Immediate-Past Chancellor Sayde J. Ladov.

The Philadelphia Bar Association's Annual Election of officers and members of the Board of Governors will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 7, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the Ballroom Level of the Hyatt at The Bellevue, Broad and Walnut streets. Officers to be elected are Vice Chancellor, Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Secretary, Assistant Treasurer and five members of the Board of Governors for three-year terms.

Ballots will be mailed on Thursday, Nov. 18. Those members who wish to vote by mail must have their ballots received (not postmarked, but received) at Bar Association headquarters by 10 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 2. Ballots received after that time will not be counted. Anyone not returning a ballot in a timely fashion may still vote in person on Tuesday, Dec. 7.

Hamilton Benefit Nov. 6 at Lincoln Financial Field

The Philadelphia Bar Foundation's Andrew Hamilton Benefit will be held Saturday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. at Lincoln Financial Field.

This year's theme is "Team Up for Justice." The event will include a buffet dinner and dancing as well as a live and silent auction. Gay Chacker & Mittin, P.C. and Hangley Aronchick Segal & Pudlin will share the Philadelphia Bar Foundation Pro Bono Award which honors outstanding law firm pro bono efforts. Ourania "Rainy" Papademetriou, co-managing attorney for litigation at Philadelphia VIP, will receive the Philadelphia Bar Foundation Award, presented to an attorney in the nonprofit legal community whose work advances the cause of equal access to justice.

Proceeds benefit the Philadelphia Bar Foundation's grantmaking which funds more than 30 public interest legal organizations that provide vital legal services to many thousands of the most vulnerable residents in our community.

My First Federal Trial Nov. 4

The YLD and the Federal Courts Committee will present "My First Federal Trial," a CLE on succeeding during this momentous event, on Nov. 4 beginning at 4 p.m. at the Federal Courthouse Ceremonial Courtroom.

Your first federal jury trial can be a harrowing experience. While there are plenty of trial practice courses available to teach trial skills, "My First Federal Trial" is designed to fill the gaps and allow you to learn directly from the judges what you really want to know, but are afraid to ask.

Hear from several judges from the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, including Hon. Legrome D. Davis, Hon. Jan E. DuBois, Hon. Mitchell S. Goldberg; Hon. C. Darnell Jones, II and Hon. Mary A. McLaughlin. Also presenting will be John A. Lord from Saltz Mongeluzzi Barrett & Bendesky and Bryan P. Werley from The Chartwell Law Offices.

Topics will include:

  • What to do in those last few hours (things that are not set out in the rules)

  • What to expect at the final pretrial conference

  • The mechanics of a trial - where to stand, where to sit, what to do with exhibits, etc.

  • What to do if you get in trouble

Hampton Award Nominations Due by Nov. 5

Nominations are now being sought for the Workers' Compensation Section Martha J. Hampton Memorial Award. The Award will be presented at the Section's Annual Holiday Party on Thursday, Dec. 2 at Cescaphe Ballroom.

This award, established in 2000, was created by the Section to honor the memory of an attorney who was an advocate, educator, and friend to all. The Award is presented annually to the member of the bar or bench who best exemplifies the qualities of compassion, dedication, commitment, and professionalism, to our Section, to the public, and to the practice of workers' compensation law, qualities which were so important to Hampton.

The award is accompanied by a donation, made on the honoree's behalf, by the firm of Galfand Berger, to Kids Chance. Kids Chance provides college scholarships to the children of injured or deceased workers.

Business Law Section Seeks Replansky Nominees

The Business Law Section is seeking nominations from the Philadelphia legal community for the Section's 2010 Dennis H. Replansky Memorial Award. The award will be presented at the Section's Annual Reception to be held on Tuesday, Jan. 25. The award recipient will receive the privilege of designating the recipient of the Section's annual charitable contribution to a public interest organization.

Award criteria are superior legal talent in the area of business law; unique contributions to and significant achievements within the business law community in the Philadelphia area; a reputation for mentoring young attorneys; significant participation in and contributions to civic and charitable causes in the community; and uniform recognition in the legal community of the candidate's honesty, integrity and professionalism.

Each candidate must be a member of the Philadelphia Bar Association's Business Law Section.

The Section established the award in recognition of Dennis Replansky's career as a lawyer and his contributions to legal, civic, religious and other charitable causes. Replansky was a 51-year-old senior partner at Blank Rome Comisky & McCauley LLP when he died in March 1994. He was a former chair of the Business Law Section.

The deadline for award nominations and letters of support is noon on Friday, Nov. 5.

Real Property Section Annual Meeting Nov. 11

Yael Lehmann, executive director of The Food Trust, will be presented with the Real Property Section's Good Deed Award at the Section's Annual Meeting and Luncheon on Thursday, Nov. 11.

Natalie Kostelni, real estate writer for the Philadelphia Business Journal, will be the keynote speaker at the program, beginning at 12 p.m. at Loews Philadelphia Hotel, 1200 Market St. Tickets are $45 for members and $50 for non-members for those who register at philadelphiabar.org by Nov. 8.

Chancellor's Forum Nov. 15 with Managing Director Negrin

The Philadelphia Bar Association will present the Chancellor's Forum, "A Conversation with Richard Negrin," on Monday, Nov. 15 at 12 p.m. at the Association's headquarters, 1101 Market St., in the 11th floor Conference Center. The event is co-sponsored by the Civil Rights Committee.

Negrin, who serves as managing director and deputy mayor for administration and coordination for the City of Philadelphia, was appointed to this post in June 2010 by Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter. Negrin will share his vision, strategy and plans for this pivotal role within the Philadelphia city government, and take questions from attendees. The event is hosted by Philadelphia Bar Association Chancellor Scott F. Cooper.

Chancellor's Forums bring expertise, in-depth analysis and attention to critical topics affecting the citizens of Philadelphia.

The Women's Rights Committee will present "Vision 2020 - Opening a Dialogue to Advance Gender Equality" on Wednesday, Nov. 17 featuring Catherine Omerod, project director of Vision 2020.

Bar Academy Presents: A Taste of Tastykake Nov. 17

The Philadelphia Bar Association Academy presents an exclusive VIP tour and tasting on Wednesday, Nov. 17, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the new home of Tastykake: the Tasty Baking Company's state-of-the-art bakery at The Philadelphia Navy Yard.

Green Ribbon Tree Planting Nov. 20

The Philadelphia Bar Association will celebrate its Green Ribbon Sustainability Initiative by planting trees on the morning of Saturday, November 20. Please join the Green Ribbon Task Force in helping make Philadelphia greener.

We'll be meeting at 22nd and Bainbridge streets at 10 a.m. to plant bare root trees with the Graduate Hospital West Tree Tenders. This will be their fifth neighborhood tree planting in which they will add to the over 120 trees they have already planted in the Graduate Hospital neighborhood of Philadelphia. No experience or heavy lifting is necessary to help. You and your family and friends are all welcome and encouraged to participate. Donations are welcome to help us purchase food and beverages for all volunteers, as well as mulch for the tree pits. Donations of cookies, muffins, other treats or cases of water for volunteers are welcome as well.

Consider lending any tools you may have. We need round-head shovels and square-head shovels (very important); picks; sledgehammers; work gloves; a wheelbarrow; brooms; and hoses and connection to a water supply or water buckets to water trees.

Notice to Potential Judicial Candidates

The Commission on Judicial Selection and Retention of the Philadelphia Bar Association evaluates the qualifications of persons seeking appointment or election to the Philadelphia Common Pleas and Municipal Courts. Individuals who wish to be considered for appointment or who are considering filing for the 2011 primary election as judicial candidates should contact the Commission on Judicial Selection & Retention c/o Charles J. Klitsch, Esq., the Bar Association's Director of Public and Legal Services, to obtain a Judicial Evaluation Questionnaire, the Commission's Guidelines for Evaluation of Attorney and Judge Candidates and Bylaws of the Philadelphia Bar Association. In order to ensure that each candidate receives a full and fair evaluation, the completed questionnaire must be returned by Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010 to "Judicial Commission" Philadelphia Bar Association, 1101 Market Street, 11th Floor, Philadelphia, PA 19107-2911. Also, candidates who have previously been evaluated by the Commission are invited to contact the Association to determine whether their ratings are current by calling Mr. Klitsch at (215) 238-6326.

Individuals are reminded that under the Commission's Guidelines, any candidates who do not participate in the Commission's evaluation process will receive "Not Recommended" ratings if they continue to pursue either appointment or election.

Chancellor's Reception Jan. 5 at Bellevue

All members of the Philadelphia legal community are invited to attend a complimentary reception on Wednesday, Jan. 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. in honor of Rudolph Garcia, 84th Chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association.

The Chancellor's Reception will be held in the Grand Ballroom at the Hyatt at The Bellevue, Broad and Walnut streets. No reservations are necessary.

This is the event at which even the city's busiest and most successful legal luminaries patiently wait in line to wish their leader and each other good luck in the year ahead.

Public Interest Training Programs, Events Set

Philadelphia VIP will host a CLE training program on how to handle a case in the Mortgage Foreclosure Diversion Project, the mandatory negotiation program operated by the First Judicial District. The event will be held Tuesday, Nov. 9 at Comcast, One Comcast Center, 45th floor, Room J/K/L. The CLE training program will be held from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Volunteers will receive one free CLE credit for each hour of course work attended (a total of 3.5 free CLE credits are available) in exchange for representing two different clients at one or more mortgage foreclosure conciliation conferences on a continuing basis until the attempted negotiation is resolved, or in exchange for volunteering as an on-call attorney at three different conciliation conference half-day sessions. The Rutgers School of Law-Camden Alumni Association will hold its inaugural Distinguished Alumni Awards Celebration on Thursday, Nov. 11 at the Westin Hotel, Route 73, in Mt. Laurel, N.J. The event will feature a cocktail hour from 6 to 7 p.m., followed by dinner and the awards ceremony from 7 to 9 p.m., which will honor Louis S. Rulli and Daniel J. Phelan. Face to Face Germantown will hold its 18th Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Trot, featuring a 5-mile run or 1-mile run/walk on Thursday, Nov. 25 at the Northwestern Avenue entrance of Forbidden Drive. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. The 5-mile run begins at 9 a.m.; the 1-mile run/walk begins at 9:05 a.m. Cost is $30 if registered by Nov. 18 and $35 after Nov. 18. Philadelphia VIP will host a CLE training program on ethics on Friday, Dec. 3 from 12 to 2:15 p.m. Presented in a lively and interactive format, this training includes a discussion of Rule 6.1: Pro Bono Publico Service, the role of training in ethical representation, malpractice insurance, models for pro bono participation, and ethical considerations for volunteer attorneys. Special considerations in the representation of low-income clients will also be explored. The event will be held at Ballard Spahr LLP, 1735 Market St., 51st Floor.
