30th St. Station to Host Hamilton Gala Nov. 4

The Philadelphia Bar Foundation will hold its annual Andrew Hamilton Gala on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 30th Street Station. The theme of this year's gala is "Neighborhoods of Philadelphia." Tickets will be available at the door for purchase by credit card only.

The North Waiting Room and South Arcade at 30th Street Station will be transformed into the best and brightest areas of the city.

The event will be "black-tie optional" to keep the elegant nature of the event, but open up the options so that gowns and tuxedos won't be required. For those who can't make it for dinner, the Bar Foundation is offering a "desserts and dancing" option starting at 10 p.m.

Tickets for the Andrew Hamilton Gala are $500 per person for patrons, $325 for subscribers and $225 for members of the Young Lawyers Division and members of the judiciary. Tickets for "desserts and dancing" are $75. Click here to purchase tickets online.

Wachovia Fidelity Award Nominations Due Nov. 3

Nominations are now being accepted for the Philadelphia Bar Association's 2006 Wachovia Fidelity Award. Nominations should be made in writing. Please include a detailed informational statement setting forth your reasons for recommending the nominee for this award. The deadline for receipt of nominations is 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3.

Nominations should be sent to Tracey Blevins, Philadelphia Bar Association, c/o Fidelity Award Committee, 1101 Market Street, 11th Floor, Philadelphia, PA 19107.

The criteria for the award are:

1. Significant accomplishments in improving the administration of justice (preferably in Philadelphia);

2. The absence of prior recognition for this work by the Philadelphia Bar Association;

3. Distinguished service consistently rendered over a considerable period of time or a single outstanding achievement in a particular year. (The fact that this single achievement may have occurred some years ago is not material so long as it has not been recognized.);

4. The accomplishment must arise from volunteer activities rather than for service rendered as a paid professional; and

5. It is preferred that the recipient be a member of the Philadelphia Bar Association not now in public office or directly involved with the court operations or any other public service activity.

Nominations for Bar Offices Due by Nov. 3

The Philadelphia Bar Association's Nominating Committee nominated the following candidates for Bar Association offices on Oct. 11: Vice Chancellor, Sayde J. Ladov; Secretary, John E. Savoth; Assistant Secretary, Kathleen D. Wilkinson; Treasurer, Scott F. Cooper; Assistant Treasurer, Jeffrey M. Lindy.

The Committee also made the following nominations for three-year terms (three of five positions) on the Board of Governors: Gaetan J. Alfano, Karen L. Detamore and Shelley R. Smith.

Notice is hereby given that the Philadelphia Bar Association is accepting additional nominations for candidates for Bar offices to be elected by the membership at the Association's Annual Meeting and Election on Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006. The deadline for filing these additional nominations is Friday, Nov. 3, 2006, at 5 p.m.

Nominations must be in writing and may take the form of a letter to the Secretary, c/o Susan Knight, Philadelphia Bar Association, 1101 Market St., Philadelphia, PA 19107-2911. Letters must state the office the individual is seeking and must include the names and signatures of at least 25 members of the Association who are entitled to vote, except for the nomination of Vice Chancellor, which shall be signed by a least 100 members who are entitled to vote. Offices to be filled are Vice Chancellor, Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer, as well as five (5) positions on the Board of Governors for a term of three years.

Candidates are also asked to provide a photograph and statement of no more than 150 words, demonstrating their qualifications to serve as a member of the Board of Governors. Photos and statements will be published in the Philadelphia Bar Reporter and must be received no later than Friday, Nov. 3, 2006, at 5 p.m.

Police Advisory Commission Members to Speak

Members of the Philadelphia Police Advisory Commission will discuss civilian oversight of police at the Thursday, Nov. 2 meeting of the Civil Rights Committee.

Real Property Section Annual Meeting Nov. 9

Brian Hudson, executive director of the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency, will receive the Real Property Section's Good Deed Award at the Section's Annual Meeting on Thursday, Nov. 9.

Tad Decker, chair of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, will be the keynote speaker at the event, which begins at 12 p.m. at Loews Philadelphia Hotel, 1200 Market St. Tickets are $40 and can be purchased online by clicking here.

The Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency was created by the General Assembly in 1972 to provide affordable housing for older adults, families of modest means, and persons with disabilities. To date, the agency has financed more than 110,000 houses and 65,000 apartment units while saving 36,000 homes from foreclosure.

Maximizing Wealth When Selling Business Nov. 9

Len Hersh of Bernstein Wealth Management will present "The Art of the Deal: Maximizing Personal Wealth When Selling a Business" at the Thursday, Nov. 9 meeting of the Closely Held Business Committee.

The Closely Held Business Committee of the Probate Section of the Philadelphia Bar Association explores planning issues unique to the closely held or family business, and advocates the use of a long range, proactive and multidisciplinary approach to the small business. Some of the topics addressed by the Committee are buy-sell arrangements, life and death transfers, income and estate tax issues, valuations, and management succession issues.

Beccaria Award Ceremony Nov. 9 at City Hall

The Criminal Justice Section and The Justinian Society of Philadelphia will present the 13th Annual Cesare Beccaria Award to Michael C. Rainone on Thursday, Nov. 9.

The ceremony will be held at 5 p.m. in the Mayor's Reception Room (Room 202) of Philadelphia City Hall. A reception will follow in Room 201. A bust of Beccaria will also be unveiled at the ceremony.

Cesare Beccaria, an 18th century Italian scholar, was an early proponent of many of the tenets of modern criminal law. His visionary work is credited with aiding the subsequent European penal code reform and the eventual development of the American criminal justice system.

Workers' Comp Section Seeks Hampton Award Nominees

The Workers' Compensation Section is seeking nominees for its Seventh Annual Martha Hampton Award. This award was named in honor of an attorney who was committed to the practice of workers compensation law. Each year a committee reviews nominations as to the attorney or judge who best exemplifies Hampton's unique compassion and dedication to her clients, her professionalism, scholarship and good will with her peers.

All members of the bar and bench, who practice workers compensation, are eligible. This is not an award restricted to clients' attorneys. Past winners have included counsel from both sides of the aisle as well as the bench.

This year's committee will include Marc S. Jacobs (partner with Hampton at Galfand Berger) and last year's section co-chairs, Judge Mark Harrison, Michael Mulvey and Matthew Wynn. Also, a charitable contribution is made each year by Galfand Berger, on behalf of the Section, to Kids Chance; an organization helping youngsters who have lost a parent due to a work-elated injury to gain a higher level of education.

Antitrust Year in Review CLE Nov. 15

The Business Law Section's Antitrust Law Committee will cosponsor the CLE program "Antitrust-An Important Year in Review" on Wednesday, Nov. 15 at The CLE Conference Center on the 10th floor of the Wanamaker Building.

The program will examine the U.S. Supreme Court's decisions in Reeder-Simco, Independent Inc. v. Illinois Tool Works and Texaco v. Dagher. Course planners for the program include Robert E. Federal E-Discovery Rules to be Discussed Nov. 15

U.S. District Court Judge Timothy J. Savage and attorneys Mary K. Brown and Paul D. Weiner will present "The New E-Discovery Rules and Judicial Approaches to E-Discovery" at the Wednesday, Nov. 15 meeting of the Federal Courts Committee.

Bar Association Candidates Forum Nov. 16

Candidates for Bar Association offices will be appearing at a candidate's forum on Thursday, Nov. 16 in the 11th floor Conference Center of Bar Association headquarters, 1101 Market St.

Barristers' Thanksgiving Drive Nov. 18

The Barristers' Association will hold its 22nd annual Thanksgiving Drive on Saturday, Nov. 18 at the Cozen PAL Center at the corner of North 17th and Brown streets

The Barristers contact area churches for the names of African-American families that need support during Thanksgiving. During last year's Thanksgiving Drive residents of the community as well as churches were able to pick-up Thanksgiving baskets from a centralized location. The Thanksgiving "baskets" contain turkeys, stuffing, vegetables, cranberry sauce, rolls, dessert, and more.

Last year, the Barristers provided "baskets" to more than 400 African-American families in the Philadelphia area. In hopes of meeting the needs of more families within the community, the Barristers would greatly appreciate a donation of $30 payable to the "Barristers' Association" by Nov. 10 to help cover the cost of the drive. Information Updates Under Way for Legal Directory

The annual process of updating the more than 18,000 attorney and law firm listings in The Legal Directory 2007 has begun!

Firm updates, the initial phase, should be completed by Monday, Nov. 27. If you are responsible for reviewing information on your firm and its attorneys, and have not received your update packet, call 410-828-0120, extension 503.

After firm updates, solo practitioners and non-responding firm-based attorneys will be contacted; the deadline for their updates is Jan. 12.

Notice to Potential Judicial Candidates

The Commission on Judicial Selection and Retention of the Philadelphia Bar Association evaluates the qualifications of persons wishing to join the judiciary.

Individuals who are filing for the 2007 primary election as judicial candidates for the Philadelphia Common Pleas or Municipal Courts should contact the Commission on Judicial Selection & Retention c/o Areetha M. Carter, Esq., the Bar Association's Staff Counsel, to obtain a copy of a Judicial Evaluation Questionnaire and a copy of the Commission's guidelines and bylaws. Please return the completed questionnaire to Judicial Commission at 1101 Market St., 11th Floor, Philadelphia, PA 19107-2911.

Candidates who have previously been evaluated by the Commission are invited to contact the Association to determine whether their ratings are current by contacting Ms. Carter at acarter@philabar.org or (215) 238-6351.

The Commission will complete all ratings for candidates running in the 2007 primary by Jan. 31, 2007; therefore, in order to ensure that each candidate receives a full and fair evaluation, no questionnaires will be accepted for evaluation after Dec. 15, 2006. Individuals are reminded that under the Commission's Guidelines, any candidates who do not participate in the Commission's evaluation process will receive "Not Recommended" ratings.
