A Taste of Tastykake Nov. 17

The Philadelphia Bar Association Academy presents an exclusive VIP tour and tasting on Wednesday, Nov. 17, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the new home of Tastykake: the Tasty Baking Company's state-of-the-art bakery at The Philadelphia Navy Yard.

Attendees can sample a selection of legendary Tastykake products, and enjoy specialty beers courtesy of Origlio Beverage, in the world's largest "green" bakery - a 345,000 square-foot, LEED-registered facility. Watch Historical Society's Chancellors Video

The Philadelphia Bar Association Historical Society unveiled on Sept. 22 a "highlights" video of interviews with past Chancellors of the Association as part of its 2010 Chancellors' video project.

The highlights video, which was unveiled at a reception held at Jenkins Law Library and also shown at the Association's 2010 Bench-Bar & Annual Conference in Atlantic City from Oct. 15-16, was produced in partnership with Temple University's School of Communications and Theater under the leadership of Temple's Senior Vice Provost for Strategic Initiatives and Communications Betsy Leebron Tutelman. The video features the reflections of 32 past Chancellors as well as Kenneth Shear, executive director of the Association for 35 years. Click here to view the video.

Individual high-definition interviews with each of the Chancellors and the executive director will be featured on the new Philadelphia Bar Association Historical Society website, launching in 2011. The website will also feature an interactive historical timeline of Philadelphia lawyer milestones that will be scalable to include the contributions of diverse segments of the bar, as well as a new, permanent gallery for the Association's Legends of the Bar. The Historical Society was first announced by Chancellor Scott F. Cooper in his December 2009 inaugural address. The Historical Society is chaired by William P. Fedullo, past chair of the Association's Commission on Judicial Selection and Retention; Robert C. Heim, past Chancellor (1991); and Roberta D. Liebenberg, 2008 recipient of the Association's Sandra Day O'Connor Award.

Bar to Elect Officers, Board Members

The Philadelphia Bar Association's Annual Election of officers and members of the Board of Governors will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 7, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the Ballroom Level of the Hyatt at The Bellevue, Broad and Walnut streets. Officers to be elected are Vice Chancellor, Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Secretary, Assistant Treasurer and five members of the Board of Governors for three-year terms.

According to Article IV, Section 406, Paragraph B, "The election shall be by (1) secret mailed ballot and (2) paper ballot or voting machine. In addition, Members may vote electronically over the Internet to the extent permitted by law pursuant to procedures established by the Board to preserve the confidentiality of the Member's vote and the integrity of the voting process. Voting machines, if available, shall be preferred for in-person voting, unless there is an election at which there is no contest. The position of the nominee on the ballot shall be determined by lot. The drawing of lots shall be conducted by the Judge of Elections not less than 25 days before the Annual Meeting in the presence of the nominees and/or their representatives. The form of the ballot shall be prescribed by the Board. A ballot shall be sent by the Association by mail to every Association member eligible to vote at least two weeks prior to the date set for the Annual Meeting. A mailed ballot shall not be counted unless it has been received at the office of the Association no later than 10 a.m. three business days prior to the date set for the Annual Meeting and in such manner as to preserve the confidentiality of the Member's vote. The Judge of Elections shall count the mailed ballots after the polls have been closed."

Ballots are to be mailed Friday, Nov. 5 and are due by Thursday, Dec. 2 at 10 a.m.

Trade Specialist to Speak Oct. 28

Senior trade specialist Samuel Cerrato of the Philadelphia Office of the United States Export Assistance Center will be the guest speaker at the Thursday, Oct. 28 meeting of the International Business Initiative Committee.

Cerrato, an export specialist with the Department of Commerce, will make a presentation designed to help your clients involved in, or considering, exporting.

The majority of the meeting will consist of discussions as to how we can help companies exporting internationally. Representatives from companies involved in export are being asked to join in the discussion. The International Business Initiative works as a liaison between agencies involved in international business and the Bar Association to help achieve President Obama's goal of increasing business with other countries.

Family Court Language Access CLE Nov. 1

The Family Law Section will present the CLE program "The Philadelphia Story: The Language of Justice in Family Court" on Monday, Nov. 1.

The program is designed to raise awareness for language access in the court and includes and interactive education session. Speakers include Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas Judge Ida K. Chen, deputy court administrator Janet Fasy, Leonard J. Rivera, Deborah L. Culhane and court interpreters Sherry Albert and Javier Aguilar. Jury Psychology in Antitrust Cases Nov. 3

The Antitrust Committee will present the CLE program "Jury Psychology in Antitrust Cases" on Wednesday Nov. 3.

Speakers for the program are MaryGrace Schaeffer and Steven J. Son, Ph.D. of Decision Quest. This program will cover jury psychology in complex business and antitrust cases: the cognitive blocks to understanding the issues, how jurors perceive the economy and the current business climate and perceptions of competition.

The program has been approved for 1 substantive CLE credit. Participants wishing to receive the CLE credit will be required to pay a fee of $33.50 for members of the Philadelphia Bar Association admitted for more than five years and $28.50 for members of the Philadelphia Bar Association admitted for less than five years. Hamilton Benefit Nov. 6 at Lincoln Financial Field

The Philadelphia Bar Foundation's Andrew Hamilton Benefit will be held Saturday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. at Lincoln Financial Field.

This year's theme is "Team Up for Justice." The event will include a buffet dinner and dancing as well as a live and silent auction. The Citizens Bank Pro Bono Award and the Philadelphia Foundation Award will be presented. Proceeds benefit the Philadelphia Bar Foundation's grantmaking which funds more than 30 public interest legal organizations that provide vital legal services to many thousands of the most vulnerable residents in our community.

Real Property Section Annual Meeting Nov. 11

Yael Lehmann, executive director of The Food Trust, will be presented with the Real Property Section's Good Deed Award at the Section's Annual Meeting and Luncheon on Thursday, Nov. 11.

Natalie Kostelni, real estate writer for the Philadelphia Business Journal, will be the keynote speaker at the program, beginning at 12 p.m. at Loews Philadelphia Hotel, 1200 Market St. Tickets are $45 for members and $50 for non-members for those who register at philadelphiabar.org by Nov. 8.

Chancellor's Forum Nov. 15 with Managing Director Negrin

The Philadelphia Bar Association will present the Chancellor's Forum, "A Conversation with Richard Negrin," on Monday, Nov. 15 at 12 p.m. at the Association's headquarters, 1101 Market St., in the 11th floor Conference Center. The event is co-sponsored by the Civil Rights Committee.

Negrin, who serves as managing director and deputy mayor for administration and coordination for the City of Philadelphia, was appointed to this post in June 2010 by Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter. Negrin will share his vision, strategy and plans for this pivotal role within the Philadelphia city government, and take questions from attendees. The event is hosted by Philadelphia Bar Association Chancellor Scott F. Cooper.

Chancellor's Forums bring expertise, in-depth analysis and attention to critical topics affecting the citizens of Philadelphia.

Brennan Award Nominations Being Accepted

Nominations are being accepted for the Philadelphia Bar Association's prestigious Justice William J. Brennan Jr. Distinguished Jurist Award. The award will be presented at the Association's Annual Meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 7 at the Hyatt at The Bellevue.

The award recognizes a jurist who adheres to the highest ideals of judicial service. Any member of the state or federal bench, whether active or retired, who has made a significant, positive impact on the quality or administration of justice in Philadelphia is eligible for consideration. Examples of accomplishments worthy of nomination include innovations in court administration, implementation of pioneering case management techniques, assumption of a leadership role in areas affecting the administration of justice, publication of a significant opinion, article, or other scholarly work, or the like.

This year's Brennan Award Committee is chaired by Michael F. Barrett. Nominations for the Justice Brennan Distinguished Jurist Award should be forwarded to: Brennan Award, Attn: Dawn Petit, Philadelphia Bar Association, 1101 Market St., 11th Floor, Philadelphia, PA 19107. All nominations should include the full name, address and telephone number of both the nominee and the person submitting the nomination, a summary of the nominee's accomplishments, and any pertinent supporting material the committee should consider. Nominations Sought for 2010 Wells Fargo Fidelity Award

Nominations are now being accepted for the Philadelphia Bar Association's 2010 Wells Fargo Fidelity Award. Nominations should be made in writing. Please include a detailed statement setting forth information and reasons why you are recommending the nominee for this award. The deadline for receipt of nominations is Friday, Oct. 29.

The criteria for the award are:

1. Significant accomplishments in improving the administration of justice (preferably in Philadelphia);

2. The absence of prior recognition for this work by the Philadelphia Bar Association;

3. Distinguished service consistently rendered over a considerable period of time or a single outstanding achievement in a particular year. (The fact that this single achievement may have occurred some years ago is not material so long as it has not been recognized.);

4. The accomplishment must arise from voluntary activities rather than for service rendered as a paid professional; and

5. It is preferred that the recipient be a member of the Philadelphia Bar Association not now in public office or directly involved with court operations or any other public service activity.

Hampton Award Nominations Due by Nov. 5

Nominations are now being sought for the Workers' Compensation Section Martha J. Hampton Memorial Award. The Award will be presented at the Section's Annual Holiday Party on Thursday, Dec. 2 at Cescaphe Ballroom.

This award, established in 2000, was created by the Section to honor the memory of an attorney who was an advocate, educator, and friend to all. The Award is presented annually to the member of the bar or bench who best exemplifies the qualities of compassion, dedication, commitment, and professionalism, to our Section, to the public, and to the practice of workers' compensation law, qualities which were so important to Hampton.

The award is accompanied by a donation, made on the honoree's behalf, by the firm of Galfand Berger, to Kids Chance. Kids Chance provides college scholarships to the children of injured or deceased workers.

Business Law Section Seeks Replansky Nominees

The Business Law Section is seeking nominations from the Philadelphia legal community for the Section's 2010 Dennis H. Replansky Memorial Award. The award will be presented at the Section's Annual Reception to be held on Tuesday, Jan. 25. The award recipient will receive the privilege of designating the recipient of the Section's annual charitable contribution to a public interest organization.

Award criteria are superior legal talent in the area of business law; unique contributions to and significant achievements within the business law community in the Philadelphia area; a reputation for mentoring young attorneys; significant participation in and contributions to civic and charitable causes in the community; and uniform recognition in the legal community of the candidate's honesty, integrity and professionalism.

Each candidate must be a member of the Philadelphia Bar Association's Business Law Section.

The Section established the award in recognition of Dennis Replansky's career as a lawyer and his contributions to legal, civic, religious and other charitable causes. Replansky was a 51-year-old senior partner at Blank Rome Comisky & McCauley LLP when he died in March 1994. He was a former chair of the Business Law Section.

The deadline for award nominations and letters of support is noon on Friday, Nov. 5.

The Commission on Judicial Selection and Retention of the Philadelphia Bar Association evaluates the qualifications of persons seeking appointment or election to the Philadelphia Common Pleas and Municipal Courts. Individuals who wish to be considered for appointment or who are considering filing for the 2011 primary election as judicial candidates should contact the Commission on Judicial Selection & Retention c/o Charles J. Klitsch, Esq., the Bar Association's Director of Public and Legal Services, to obtain a Judicial Evaluation Questionnaire, the Commission's Guidelines for Evaluation of Attorney and Judge Candidates and Bylaws of the Philadelphia Bar Association. "Opera 101" Organizers Thanked

Public Interest Training Programs, Events Set

Villanova School of Law will present the free CLE program "Legal Rights of Individuals with Disabilities," on Thursday, Oct. 28 in Room 303, at 3:45 p.m., at Villanova Law School. Mark Murphy, from the Disabilities Rights Network, and David Gates, from Pennsylvania Health Law, will discuss best practices in the field of disability law. Two free CLE credits will be provided. Philadelphia VIP will host a CLE training program on how to handle a case in the Mortgage Foreclosure Diversion Project, the mandatory negotiation program operated by the First Judicial District. The event will be held Tuesday, Nov. 9 at Comcast, One Comcast Center, 45th floor, Room J/K/L. The CLE training program will be held from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Volunteers will receive one free CLE credit for each hour of course work attended (a total of 3.5 free CLE credits are available) in exchange for representing two different clients at one or more mortgage foreclosure conciliation conferences on a continuing basis until the attempted negotiation is resolved, or in exchange for volunteering as an on-call attorney at three different conciliation conference half-day sessions. Philadelphia VIP will host a CLE training program on ethics on Friday, Dec. 3 from 12 to 2:15 p.m. Presented in a lively and interactive format, this training includes a discussion of Rule 6.1: Pro Bono Publico Service, the role of training in ethical representation, malpractice insurance, models for pro bono participation, and ethical considerations for volunteer attorneys.
