Candidates Election Forums Nov. 14, 15

All members of the Philadelphia Bar Association are invited to attend two Election Forums to hear from candidates seeking offices in the Association's 2012 Annual Election. The forums will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 14 (featuring Vice Chancellor and officer candidates) and Thursday, Nov. 15 (featuring Board of Governors candidates). Both programs begin at 12 p.m.

The forums will be moderated by Elections Committee Chair and Immediate-Past Chancellor Rudolph Garcia and will be held in the 11th floor Conference Center at the Philadelphia Bar Association, 1101 Market St. Lunch is available for $8 for those members who register in advance; or, bring a brown-bag lunch. The Philadelphia Bar Association's Annual Election of officers and members of the Board of Governors will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 4, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the Ballroom Level of the Hyatt at The Bellevue, Broad and Walnut streets. Offices to be elected are Vice Chancellor, Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Secretary, Assistant Treasurer and five members of the Board of Governors for three-year terms.

Ballots will be mailed on Friday, Nov. 16. Those members who wish to vote by mail must have their ballots received (not postmarked, but received) at Bar Association headquarters by 10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29. Ballots received after that time will not be counted. Anyone not returning a ballot in a timely fashion may still vote in person on Tuesday, Dec. 4.

The Association's Annual Meeting Luncheon, featuring inaugural remarks by incoming Chancellor Kathleen D. Wilkinson of Wilson Elser Moskowitz Edelman & Dicker LLP, will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 4 at 12 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom of the Hyatt at The Bellevue, Broad and Walnut Streets. The event will also feature the presentation of the Justice William J. Brennan Jr. Distinguished Jurist Award, and the PNC Achievement Award. YLD to Elect 7 to Executive Committee

Nine candidates are running for seven seats on the Young Lawyers Division Executive Committee in the Tuesday, Dec. 4 election.

The candidates are Philip D. Amoa, T. Justin Chapman, Andrew J. Kornblau, Jim Nixon, Matthew Olesh, Shabrei Parker, Jennifer Russell, Matthew T. Stone and Robert Zimmerman. Committee members serve three-year terms.

Balloting for members of the Young Lawyers Division Executive Committee will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 4, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the Ballroom Level of the Hyatt at The Bellevue, Broad and Walnut streets. Ballots will be mailed on Friday, Nov. 16 and must be returned to the Philadelphia Bar Association, 1101 Market St., 11th Floor, Philadelphia, PA 19107-2955 by Thursday, Nov. 29 at 10 a.m.

Note: Only members in good standing of the Association's Young Lawyers Division may cast votes in this election. Attorneys are members of the Division if (1) they have not yet reached or reached in 2011 the age of 37, or (2) they have not yet reached or reached in 2012 the third anniversary of their first admission to the bar of any state.

Register for Shuster Fellowship By Oct. 19

The Morris M. Shuster Public Interest Fellowship Program provides educational loan repayment assistance in the form of forgivable loans to selected qualifying attorneys employed full-time by Philadelphia Bar Foundation (PBF) grantee organizations.

In 2003, Shuster recognized the burden that student loan obligations may represent for public interest attorneys, and so established the Fellowship as a means to help legal services organizations funded by PBF attract and retain qualified attorneys and thereby help provide ongoing stability to Philadelphia’s legal services system.

Two levels of assistance are available based on applicants' years of experience in public interest law.

Level 1 assistance: One or more selected Shuster Fellows with at least five years' experience will receive assistance that equals the recipient’s current "net annual educational loan indebtedness" or $5,000, whichever is less.

Level 2 assistance: Two or more selected Shuster Fellows with at least three years' experience will receive assistance that equals the recipient's current "net annual educational loan indebtedness" or $2,500, whichever is less.

How to Handle a Child Abuse Case Oct. 24

The Support Center for Child Advocates and Pennsylvania Bar Institute will present the volunteer training workshop "How to Handle a Child Abuse Case" on Wednesday, Oct. 24.

The Support Center for Child Advocates provides legal assistance and social service advocacy to abused and neglected children in Philadelphia County. Child Advocates is one of the most successful volunteer models serving children in the country. Each pro bono attorney is teamed with a staff case handler and assigned one child or sibling group. The child advocate team conducts home visits, participates in service planning meetings and court hearings. All volunteers must attend this full-day training program, which includes presentations on the Juvenile Act, the Child Protective Services Law, the role of a child advocate in a criminal case, representing parents in Dependency proceedings, service planning, and the dynamics of child abuse. Our training manual, "How to Handle A Child Abuse Case," with the latest Juvenile Act amendments and Juvenile Court rules, is provided to attendees. This course also provides certification for eligibility to receive court-appointed dependency cases.

Nuts and Bolts of Board Service CLE Oct. 26

The Young Lawyers Division and Philadelphia Bar Foundation will present the CLE program "The Nuts and Bolts of Board Service: An Introduction to Legal Issues for Nonprofits and Their Directors" on Friday, Oct. 26.

This CLE program will provide attorneys interested in serving on a nonprofit board an introduction to the role of the board of directors and the laws governing nonprofits, as well as offer overviews of nonprofit law and organization, related tax law, and fundraising. After the substantive CLE, participants are encouraged to remain for discussion with a panel comprised of board directors and executive directors who will share their experiences and give guidance to those who want to join a nonprofit board. The featured speaker is Marla Conley, who serves as director of The Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania and Prevent Child Abuse.

Business Law Section Seeks Replansky Nominees

The Business Law Section is seeking nominations from the Philadelphia legal community for the Section's 2012 Dennis H. Replansky Memorial Award. The award will be presented at the Section's Annual Reception to be held in January. The award recipient will receive the privilege of designating the recipient of the Section's annual charitable contribution to a public interest organization.

Award criteria are superior legal talent in the area of business law; unique contributions to and significant achievements within the business law community in the Philadelphia area; a reputation for mentoring young attorneys; significant participation in and contributions to civic and charitable causes in the community; and uniform recognition in the legal community of the candidate's honesty, integrity and professionalism.

Each candidate must be a member of the Philadelphia Bar Association's Business Law Section.
The Section established the award in recognition of Dennis Replansky's career as a lawyer and his contributions to legal, civic, religious and other charitable causes. Replansky was a 51-year-old senior partner at Blank Rome Comisky & McCauley LLP when he died in March 1994. He was a former chair of the Business Law Section.

Clothing, Volunteers Needed for Harvest for Homeless Nov. 3

The Young Lawyers Division is collecting clothes for its annual Harvest for the Homeless program on Saturday, Nov. 3. All clothes and non-perishable items are greatly appreciated for donation.

Specifically, the YLD is looking for donations of any clothes for men, women and children including sweat shirts, t-shirts, pants, shorts, thermal underwear, underwear (new please), socks, coats, gloves, scarves, hats, sweat suits, sweaters, etc. The shelters also appreciate blankets and towels.

We are also looking for toiletries, large or small, including soap, disposable razors, shaving cream, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, hand lotion, combs, brushes, etc.

Some of the shelters will take canned and non-perishable food items and we will take them if we get them; however, our focus is on clothes, bedding and toiletries.

These items can be dropped off at the donations sites below by or before Thursday, Nov. 1, or brought directly to the offices of Ballard Spahr LLP on Nov. 3 at 8:30 a.m.

All of those who are willing and have volunteered to sort should be at the loading dock at Ballard Spahr by 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 3. Please stay as long as you can but know that any time you spend is appreciated so please just come and stay as long as you can. The more volunteers we have, the quicker we will be sending the deliveries on their way (all are welcome). The loading dock is located on 19th and Commerce streets between JFK Boulevard and Market Street. The entrance is just past JFK on the left-hand side. Come down the ramp and proceed right. Ballard is the first dock on the left-hand side.

For those commuting or walking, someone will meet you in the lobby of the Mellon Bank Center Building at 1735 Market St. at 8:25 a.m. and direct you to loading dock. Volunteers will open up the donation bags and sort the items, placing them at the appropriate station sites for subsequent bagging.

Once the sorting has begun, deliveries can start. Deliveries will be made to homeless shelters requesting specific items (some are for men only, others are for women and children only and some are for men, women and children). The shelters are all within the city limits. We will provide the names of the shelters with directions a few days before the event. We will also have print outs with directions on the day of the event.

Workers' Comp Section Day of Service Nov. 4

The Workers' Compensation Section will hold its inaugural Day of Service on Sunday, Nov. 4 at the Ronald McDonald House, 3925 Chestnut St.

We need approximately 15 volunteers who will cook breakfast for families who are staying at the Ronald McDonald House while a child in their family is undergoing treatment at one of the area's hospitals. We will serve approximately 40-50 people breakfast.

We will arrive at the house at around 8 a.m. and will be finished by 11:30 a.m. The volunteers are responsible for bringing the food that they will prepare; the Ronald McDonald House provides the pots, pans, utensils and appliances necessary. Financial Responsibility for Nonprofit Boards Nov. 7

Laura Otten, Ph.D., director of The Nonprofit Center at LaSalle University's School of Business, will be the featured speaker at the YLD Live, Lunch and Learn program "Financial Responsibility for Non-Profit Boards" on Wednesday, Nov. 7.

The responsibility of financial oversight extends beyond the finance committee of the board to every board member. Yet too few board members either know this or take this responsibility on fully, frequently preferring to leave it to others. The downside to this is becoming tomorrow's headline, something a board is supposed to prevent. There are key financial roles that nonprofit boards must assume and during this presentation, these roles, from setting financial policies to monitoring the money to allocation of costs, will be identified and explained.

Meet the Federal Judges Reception Oct. 25

The Federal Bar Association will hold a "meet the judges" reception for the district judges and magistrate judges of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania on Thursday, Oct. 25.

Speakers include U.S. District Court Chief Judge J. Curtis Joyner; Frank McGovern, president elect of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania Chapter of the Federal Bar Association; and Robert DeSousa, national President of the Federal Bar Association.

Legality of Drone Strikes Presentation Nov. 5

The American Jewish Committee and the Brandeis Law Society will present "The Legality of Drone Strikes & Interrogation Tactics in the War on Terrorism" with Professor Amos Guiora, S.J. Quinney College of Law, University of Utah on Monday, Nov. 5.

Prof. Guiora teaches Criminal Procedure, International Law, Global Persepctive on Counter-terrorism and Religion and Terrorism. He has extensively published in the U.S. and Europe on national security issues.

SeniorLAW Center Wine Tasting Fundraiser Nov. 13

The SeniorLAW Center will hold an Italian Wine Tasting Party on Tuesday, Nov. 13 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Marvin Comisky Conference Center at Blank Rome LLP, One Logan Square.

The Wine School of Philadelphia will lead a two-hour tasting of Italian premium wines. Proceeds from the wine tasting will support SeniorLAW Center's work protecting the legal rights of senior citizens in need, including grandparents raising grandchildren, victims of elder abuse and exploitation, and elders facing eviction and homelessness. Barristers Thanksgiving Drive Nov. 17

The Barristers' Association of Philadelphia will hold its 28th Annual Thanksgiving Drive on Saturday, Nov. 17.

Barristers members distribute turkey baskets at the Cozen Police Athletic League, at 732 N. 17th St. (17th and Brown), on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. The Thanksgiving baskets contain turkeys, stuffing, vegetables, cranberry sauce, rolls, dessert, and more. Last year, more than 400 families in the Philadelphia area received the baskets.

To meet this year's goal of 500 families, the Barristers' Association would greatly appreciate new supporters, with a suggested donation of $40. Donations of any amount will be gladly accepted.

Encourage friends, co-workers, colleagues and family members to support Philadelphia families in need. The Barristers can provide a template email to forward to your contacts. Please make donations, made payable to the Barristers' Association of Philadelphia by Nov. 9 to help cover the cost of the drive.

FJD Seeks Applicants for Judicial Fellowship Program

Philadelphia judges are seeking to host law school graduates as judicial fellows to provide the graduates with substantive legal experience while benefitting the court system with additional legal talent, as part of the First Judicial District's Judicial Fellowship Program. The program was created in 2011 to address the difficult hiring climate for lawyers that many recent law graduates are facing. Participating law schools include the Earle Mack School of Law at Drexel University, the University of Pennsylvania Law School, Temple University Beasley School of Law, Rutgers University Law School, Villanova University School of Law, Penn State University Dickinson School of Law and Widener University School of Law but the judges welcome applicants from any accredited law school.

The Judicial Fellowship Program provides high-caliber law graduates professional development opportunities. At the same time, the judicial fellows help the busy court carry out key functions and maintain its superior quality of service to the Philadelphia community. Judicial fellows work in the civil, criminal, family and orphans divisions of the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas and Municipal Courts, carrying out the same duties as paid judicial clerks. The fellowships help recent graduates gain valuable experience and strengthen their marketability for obtaining a paid position in law. Judges select judicial fellows through an application process administered by the court. Each judge and fellow team designs a flexible schedule (minimum of 20 hours per week) that ensures reliable service to the judge but permits the fellow to seek a paid position elsewhere and to leave the fellowship with two weeks' notice upon obtaining paid employment.

Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas Judge Lisa M. Rau developed the program with help from Professor Chapin Cimino of the Earle Mack School of Law at Drexel University as well as faculty and administrators from career services offices at the University of Pennsylvania's Law School and Temple's Beasley School of Law. The Philadelphia Bar Association is a supporter of the Judicial Fellowship Program.

During the first year of the program's existence, 88 percent of the 30 judicial fellows left their fellowships having successfully secured paid positions.

ICC Procedural and Jurisdictional Challenges Nov. 8

The Philadelphia Global Initiative on the Rule of Law will present the CLE program "Procedural and Jurisdictional Challenges" on Thursday, Nov. 8 at Temple University Beasley School of Law.

The morning panel, "Judges' Insights: A Comparison of Criminal Procedure in the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the U.S., will be moderated by Prof. James A. Shellenberger and features speakers ICC First Vice President Judge Monageng, U.S. District Court Judge Robert B. Kugler and Karen L. Corrie, Litigation Fellow at the Open Society Justice Initiative.

The afternoon panel, "The Role of the ICC in the Global Legal Order: Making the Rome Statute's Vision of Global Justice a Reality" will be moderated by Prof. Margaret M. deGuzman with speakers Rod Rastan, Legal Advisor in the Office of the Prosecutor at the ICC and Matthew Heaphy, Deputy Convener American NGO Coalition for the ICC.
