Honors for Presenza, Pichini; Robinson to Speak Oct. 30

President Judge Louis J. Presenza of Philadelphia Municipal Court and former Women in the Profession Committee Chair Roberta D. Pichini (center) will be honored at the Association's Oct. 30 Quarterly Meeting and Luncheon at the Park Hyatt Philadelphia at the Bellevue. Presenza has been selected as the recipient of the 2006 Justice William J. Brennan Jr. Distinguished Jurist Award. The award recognizes a jurist who adheres to the highest ideals of judicial service. Pichini will receive the Sandra Day O'Connor Award, which is conferred annually on a woman attorney who has demonstrated superior legal talent, achieved significant legal accomplishments and has furthered the advancement of women in both the profession and the community. Pichini is a partner with Feldman, Shepherd, Wohlgelernter, Tanner and Weinstock.

Robinson, the first woman to serve as president of Ireland and the former United Nations high commissioner for human rights, will deliver the keynote address. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased online at philadelphiabar.org.

Nominating Committee Selects Eight

The Philadelphia Bar Association's Nominating Committee nominated the following candidates for Bar Association offices on Oct. 11: Vice Chancellor, Sayde J. Ladov; Secretary, John E. Savoth; Assistant Secretary, Kathleen D. Wilkinson; Treasurer, Scott F. Cooper; Assistant Treasurer, Jeffrey M. Lindy.

The Committee also made the following nominations for three-year terms (three of five positions) on the Board of Governors: Gaetan J. Alfano, Karen L. Detamore and Shelley R. Smith.

Notice is hereby given that the Philadelphia Bar Association is accepting additional nominations for candidates for Bar offices to be elected by the membership at the Association's Annual Meeting and Election on Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006. The deadline for filing these additional nominations is Friday, Nov. 3, 2006, at 5 p.m.

Nominations must be in writing and may take the form of a letter to the Secretary, c/o Susan Knight, Philadelphia Bar Association, 1101 Market St., Philadelphia, PA 19107-2911. Letters must state the office the individual is seeking and must include the names and signatures of at least 25 members of the Association who are entitled to vote, except for the nomination of Vice Chancellor, which shall be signed by a least 100 members who are entitled to vote. Offices to be filled are Vice Chancellor, Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer, as well as five (5) positions on the Board of Governors for a term of three years.

Candidates are also asked to provide a photograph and statement of no more than 150 words, demonstrating their qualifications to serve as a member of the Board of Governors. Photos and statements will be published in the Philadelphia Bar Reporter and must be received no later than Friday, Nov. 3, 2006, at 5 p.m.

Solo and Small Firm Committee to Learn About Getting Paid

Ellen Freedman, law practice management coordinator for the Pennsylvania Bar Association, will discuss ways to ensure that attorneys get paid for the work they do at the Thursday, Oct. 12 meeting of the Solo and Small Firm Committee.

This one-credit lunchtime CLE course will take you through the series of essential steps that are guaranteed to reduce your receivables and improve your cash flow. Covered topics include the emotional issues connected to managing receivables for both attorneys and clients; performing credit checks; engagement agreements; timing issues billing and follow-up; communications; and when to put the pen down.

Tax Section Holding Lunchtime CLE Program Oct. 12

The Tax Section will present the lunchtime CLE program "Business, Tax, and ERISA Issues in the Formation of Venture Capital, Private Equity, and Real Estate Funds" on Thursday, Oct. 12.

Speakers Daniel R. Blickman, Keith Kaplan and Andree M. St. Martin will discuss business, tax and ERISA issues involved in the formation of venture capital, private equity and real estate funds. The issues will be discussed in terms of both their legal analysis and current market practice, and from the perspective of the sponsor and the investors.

The program will be held from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at The CLE Conference Center on the 10th floor of the Wanamaker Building. Lunch is included with your tuition. Fattah, Vallas at Chancellor's Forum on School Funding

Congressman Chaka Fattah and Philadelphia School District CEO Paul Vallas will be the keynote speakers at an Oct. 16 Chancellor's Forum "How Pennsylvania School Funding Jeopardizes Philadelphia's Future (And What You Can Do About It)."

Vallas and Fattah will be joined on the panel by Helen Gym, a former teacher and consultant with the district and a parent activist. Gym is also the former editor of Public School Notebook, an independent quarterly education newspaper for public school parents and teachers.

The lunchtime meeting, hosted by Chancellor Alan M. Feldman in the 11th floor Conference Center at Bar Association headquarters, is open to the public and begins at 12 p.m. with a free lunch, followed by presentations from Fattah and Vallas at 12:15 p.m. and then a question-and-answer period.

Examination of Medicaid Report Oct. 17

Joseph W. "Chip" Marshall III, a member of the Medicaid Commission selected by Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt, will discuss the commission's two-year project and upcoming report in a lunchtime meeting on Tuesday, Oct.17.

YLD Fall Family Spooktacular at Sesame Place Oct. 22

Bar Foundation's Hamilton Gala Nov. 4 at 30th St. Station

The Philadelphia Bar Foundation will hold its annual Andrew Hamilton Gala on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 30th Street Station. The theme of this year's gala is "Neighborhoods of Philadelphia."

Public Interest Section Seeks Hamilton Award Nominees

The Public Interest Section of the Philadelphia Bar Association is looking for nominees for the annual Andrew Hamilton Award. The deadline for nominations is Friday, Oct. 27.

Nominees must be a legal services advocate or public defender employed by, or associated with, an organization whose purpose is to serve persons who cannot afford to pay for legal representation, or, be a public-interest lawyer working with a nonprofit organization serving a charitable or public interest purpose. In addition, nominees must have substantial experience in legal services, indigent defense or public interest law and must currently be employed in one of these capacities. In particular, members of the selection committee will consider such factors as personal vision and commitment; critical nature of the problems addressed by the nominee's advocacy; innovative nature of the nominee's work; outcomes and results achieved through effective advocacy; the difficulty of achievement; and community commitment.

Nominations are encouraged and should include the individual's name, address and a brief statement describing his or her qualifications. All nominations should be mailed to Robert C. Heim at Dechert LLP, Cira Centre, 2929 Arch St., Philadelphia, PA 19104.

Notice to Potential Judicial Candidates

The Commission on Judicial Selection and Retention of the Philadelphia Bar Association evaluates the qualifications of persons wishing to join the judiciary.

Individuals who are filing for the 2007 primary election as judicial candidates for the Philadelphia Common Pleas or Municipal Courts should contact the Commission on Judicial Selection & Retention c/o Areetha M. Carter, Esq., the Bar Association's Staff Counsel, to obtain a copy of a Judicial Evaluation Questionnaire and a copy of the Commission's guidelines and bylaws. Please return the completed questionnaire to Judicial Commission at 1101 Market St., 11th Floor, Philadelphia, PA 19107-2911.

Candidates who have previously been evaluated by the Commission are invited to contact the Association to determine whether their ratings are current by contacting Ms. Carter at acarter@philabar.org or (215) 238-6351.

The Commission will complete all ratings for candidates running in the 2007 primary by Jan. 31, 2007; therefore, in order to ensure that each candidate receives a full and fair evaluation, no questionnaires will be accepted for evaluation after Dec. 15, 2006. Individuals are reminded that under the Commission's Guidelines, any candidates who do not participate in the Commission's evaluation process will receive "Not Recommended" ratings.

Representatives from more than 16 pro bono referral programs and public interest law centers will be available to speak about volunteer opportunities at their organizations. Child Advocates Golf Classic Oct. 16

Urban League Unity Golf Classic Oct. 16

Judge Kremer Portrait to Be Unveiled Oct. 17

A portrait of the late Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas Judge I. Raymond Kremer will be unveiled on Tuesday, Oct. 17 at 4 p. m. in Courtroom 653 City Hall during ceremonies that will remember Judge Kremer and endow a scholarship in his memory at Temple University's Beasley School of Law.

The event is sponsored by the Louis D. Brandeis Law Society and the Friends and Family of Judge Kremer. The portrait that will hang in City Hall is the work of noted local portrait artist Joseph Routon. All members of the Philadelphia legal community are invited to attend the event, which will be followed by a brief reception in the City Hall Law Library, Room 600.

Free CLE Project PEACE Training Oct. 20

Project PEACE will hold a free CLE training session for attorneys interested in working with a Project PEACE School on Friday, Oct. 20 from 9 to 11 a.m.

The Women's Rights Committee will hold a fashion show fund-raiser for Women Against Abuse on Oct. 20 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m at the Nicole Miller store at the Park Hyatt Philadelphia at the Bellevue, Broad and Walnut streets.

Dessert and Wine Reception Oct. 21

The Center for Lesbian and Gay Civil Rights will hold a dessert and wine reception on Saturday, Oct. 21 from 8 to 10 p.m. at the National Liberty Museum, 321 Chestnut St.

The reception will feature sweets donated by some of Philadelphia's best-known restaurants and patisseries. A number of supporters are hosting Night for Rights house parties. YLD Seeks Mentors, Coaches for Mock Trial Competition

Members of the Young Lawyers Division of the Philadelphia Bar Association will once again serve as mentors and coaches for the High School Mock Trail Competition. This year's competition begins with the Mock Trial Law Camp, set for Saturday, Oct. 28 at Temple University Beasley School of Law, located at 1719 N. Broad St.

The camp is an intensive all-day training session that couples an instructive component with hands-on training in direct and cross-examination of parties and witnesses. Students get an introduction to the key components of the trial, including the rules of evidence and opening and closing statements.

Attorney volunteers are essential to the success of this program. As group leaders, they guide small teams of students through the entire day's program. More than assisting students with preparation and presentation for their trials, attorney volunteers serve as mentors and a resource to high school students who one day wish to follow in their footsteps to a career in the legal field. Lawyers will be provided with instructions and guidelines to assist in their participation.

After Mock Trial Camp, students from 50 public, private and parochial schools will compete in a simplified mock trial for the City Mock Trial Championship in the spring. The students are given the opportunity to play the roles of attorneys and witnesses in a fictitious criminal or civil case, focusing on real legal issues. Previous trials have involved the suppression of evidence, hate crimes, constitutional issues, simple negligence matters, civil forfeitures in a criminal context and first-degree murder.

YLD volunteer coaches are integral in guiding students in understanding the way a trial works, helping to develop trial strategies and promoting an understanding of trial fundamentals. The teams compete in a round-robin tournament, with the best teams ultimately advancing to the state championship in Harrisburg to represent the Philadelphia region. The state champions go on to represent Pennsylvania in the national finals.

Brandeis Society Accepting Levy Award Nominations

Nominations are now being accepted for the Benjamin F. Levy Community Service Award, an award presented by the Louis D. Brandeis Law Society at its annual Hanukkah party in December.

The award provides recognition to an individual who is a member of the bench or bar and has demonstrated a sustained commitment to serving the legal and broader community. The award is named to honor the life of Benjamin F. Levy, whose efforts contributed to the creation of the Louis D. Brandeis Law Society. Click here to learn more about Levy.

Dash for Democracy Nov. 4 at Independence Mall

Join the hundreds that have already registered for the Committee of Seventy's inaugural Dash for Democracy 5K Run/Walk on Independence Mall on Saturday, Nov. 4 - just three days before an election that includes the hottest race in the nation.

The Dash, organized by Boston Marathon Race Director Dave McGillivray, is not your ordinary 5K but rather a platform for you to run or walk for issues that are important to you. To have as much fun as possible, The Committee of Seventy is holding a Creative Expressions Contest with prizes to reward the most innovative and entertaining ways of expressing your issues, passions or beliefs.

The Dash, which is a USATF-certified course, is a completely unique concept as this is the first time a run/walk is being used as a vehicle to promote democracy. The race route is worth highlighting as it also is a first - the Dash starts in front of the National Constitution Center, takes you up Market Street around City Hall, out to Logan Circle and back. Imagine - thousands of people running and walking through the heart of the city dressed in ways to draw attention to their issue.

Other activities happening at the Dash include a "Democracy Your Way" Expo inside the National Constitution Center from 7 a.m. until noon that will showcase more than 30 area nonprofits with information on how to get involved in your community. Volunteers Sought for Penn Mock Trial Event

The University of Pennsylvania Mock Trial Team is looking for judges, attorneys or law students to volunteer to serve as presiding judges or scoring judges for the 2006 Quaker Classic Invitational on Nov. 10 and 11, at which some of the best college mock trial teams from across the country will compete.

All trials will be held in Jon M. Huntsman Hall, 3730 Walnut St. Food will be provided to judges on both Friday, Nov. 10 and Saturday, Nov. 11. The rules that govern tournaments require one presiding judge for each trial and one or two scoring judges. Since there will be about 15 trials going on simultaneously each round, 30 to 45 judges will be needed per round.
