Author Sonia Nazario at Oct. 31 Chancellor's Forum

Sonia Nazario, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of "Enrique's Journey: The Story of a Boy's Dangerous Odyssey to Reunite With His Mother " will discuss her book at a Wednesday, Oct. 31 Chancellor's Forum. "Enrique’s Journey" chronicles the real-life struggle of a Honduran boy trying to locate his mother in the United States.

This first-hand account describes the life-threatening trips made by children who come to the United States without parents. Nazario accompanied Enrique and other youth as they spent weeks traveling through Central America and Mexico to reach the United States. Her presentation will include slides of the journey. She will also discuss the issues facing immigrant youth separated from their families as well as the need for pro bono work in this area. This program is co-sponsored by the Philadelphia Bar Association’s Immigration Law Committee and HIAS Pennsylvania.

Realty Transfer Tax Update Oct. 4

The Tax Section and the Pennsylvania Bar Institute will present the CLE program "Realty Transfer Tax Update" on Thursday, Oct. 4.

Bar Foundation Seeks Award Nominees; Deadline is Oct. 5

The Philadelphia Bar Foundation is soliciting nominations for two awards it presents each year. The deadline for nominations has been extended until Friday, Oct. 5.

The Philadelphia Bar Foundation Award was established to honor the memory of Louis D. Apothaker, a prominent Philadelphia attorney and past president of the Bar Foundation who was an outstanding leader within the legal profession and in the community. The award carries on this tradition and recognizes a public interest attorney who provides exceptional service to the non-profit legal services community.

The Pro Bono Award, first presented in 2003, is given annually to a Philadelphia law firm or corporate legal department that demonstrates outstanding volunteer efforts in providing legal services to those in need.

Bar Association Election Notice; Deadline is Oct. 5

The Philadelphia Bar Association has formed its Elections Committee which is chaired by Past Chancellor Rudolph Garcia and consists of Jeffrey Campolongo, Brian S. Chacker, Ourania Papademetriou, Scott W. Reid, Gina Furia Rubel, Louis S. Rulli, Melanie J. Taylor, H. Marc Tepper, Eric H. Weitz and Marc J. Zucker. Chancellor John E. Savoth, Chancellor-Elect Kathleen D. Wilkinson, and Vice Chancellor William P. Fedullo serve as ex-officio members. As Secretary, Sophia Lee serves as a non-voting member.

Offices for which candidates are being solicited are Vice Chancellor, Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer, and five seats on the Board of Governors. Each Board seat carries a three-year term.

Association members may become candidates for any of these offices by filing with the Secretary, at least 60 days prior to the Dec. 4, 2012 Annual Meeting, nominations in writing which, for candidates of the Board, must be signed by at least 25 Members who are entitled to vote; for candidates for Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Secretary and Assistant Treasurer, shall be signed by at least 35 Members who are entitled to vote; and for candidates for Vice Chancellor, shall be signed by at least 100 Members who are entitled to vote.

YLD Election Nomination Deadline is Oct. 9

The Young Lawyers Division is now accepting nominations from any voting member of the YLD interested in serving a three-year term on the Executive Committee. This year's YLD Executive Committee election will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 4.

The Nominating Petition and Personal Statement must be returned to Dawn Petit, Meetings Coordinator, Philadelphia Bar Association, 1101 Market St., 11th Floor, Philadelphia, PA 19107 or dpetit@philabar.org, no later than 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 9.

Each year, seven new members are elected to the YLD Executive Committee. Any voting member of the YLD is eligible for election provided that the term of office for which the individual runs shall not extend beyond his or her membership in the Division. A member is eligible if he/she is 37 years old or less in the year 2015 or, if he/she is older than 37, not celebrating more than his/her third year of practice in 2015.

The Executive Committee manages and directs the business and activities of the YLD's approximately 3,000 members, including oversight of more than 30 committees in the areas of public service, law-related education and service to the legal community. Being on the YLD Executive Committee provides lawyers opportunities for leadership, networking, and personal and professional growth early in their careers.

Brennan Award Nominations Being Accepted

Nominations are being accepted for the Philadelphia Bar Association's prestigious Justice William J. Brennan Jr. Distinguished Jurist Award. The award will be presented at the Association's Annual Meeting on Dec. 4.

The award recognizes a jurist who adheres to the highest ideals of judicial service. Any member of the state or federal bench, whether active or retired, who has made a significant, positive impact on the quality or administration of justice in Philadelphia is eligible for consideration. Examples of accomplishments worthy of nomination include innovations in court administration, implementation of pioneering case management techniques, assumption of a leadership role in areas affecting the administration of justice, publication of a significant opinion, article, or other scholarly work, or the like.

Michael F. Barrett is chairing this year's Brennan Award Committee. Nominations Sought for 2012 PNC Achievement Award

Nominations are being accepted for the 2012 PNC Achievement Award (formerly the Fidelity Award). Nominations should be made in writing. Please include a detailed statement setting forth information and reasons why you are recommending the nominee for this award. The deadline for receipt of nominations is Thursday, Oct. 11.

The criteria for the award are:

• Significant accomplishments in improving the administration of justice (preferably in Philadelphia);

• The absence of prior recognition for this work by the Philadelphia Bar Association;

• Distinguished service consistently rendered over a considerable period of time or a single outstanding achievement in a particular year. (The fact that this single achievement may have occurred some years ago is not material so long as it has not been recognized.);

• The accomplishment must arise from voluntary activities rather than for service rendered as a paid professional; and

• It is preferred that the recipient be a member of the Philadelphia Bar Association not now in public office or directly involved with court operations or any other public service activity.

Workers' Comp CLE on Uninsured Employer Claims Oct. 12

The Workers' Compensation Section will present the CLE program "Uninsured Employer Claims: Special Handling Required" on Friday, Oct. 12.

This program will explore the unique issues, concerns, and strategies involved in litigating Pennsylvania workers' compensation matters where the named employer is apparently not insured for workers' compensation. The issue will be explored from the viewpoint of the claimant's attorney, the viewpoint of the attorney representing the employers individually, as well as the viewpoint of the Uninsured Employer Guaranty Fund.

Young Lawyers Sought for Board Observer Program

The Board Observation Program - a joint initiative of the Young Lawyers Division, the Bar Foundation and the Delivery of Legal Services Committee - is recruiting organizations and young lawyers for 2013.

In the program's inaugural year, 19 young lawyers were paired with nine public interest legal organizations. While learning more about the nuts and bolts of nonprofit board service, the 2012 "class" of observers have helped their organizations with special events, electronic communication and social media, marketing materials, employee and organizational handbooks, fundraising and other activities.

Hamilton Award Nominations Due By Oct. 15

The Public Interest Section is now accepting nominations for the annual Andrew Hamilton Award. The deadline for nominations is Monday, Oct. 15.

Nominees must be a legal services advocate or public defender employed by, or associated with, an organization whose purpose is to serve persons who cannot afford to pay for legal representation, or be a public-interest lawyer working with a nonprofit organization serving a charitable or public interest purpose. In addition, nominees must have substantial experience in legal services, indigent defense or public interest law and must currently be employed in one of these capacities. Members of the selection committee will consider such factors as personal vision and commitment; critical nature of the problems addressed by the nominee's advocacy; innovative nature of the nominee's work; outcomes and results achieved through effective advocacy; the difficulty of achievement; and community commitment.

Nominations are encouraged and should include the individual's name, address and a brief statement describing his or her qualifications. Philadelphia VIP will hold its annual Pro Bono Opportunities Day program "The Ethics of Doing Good: An Overview of the Ethical Implications of Pro Bono Service" on Tuesday, Oct. 23.

How to Handle a Child Abuse Case Oct. 24

The Support Center for Child Advocates and Pennsylvania Bar Institute will present the volunteer training workshop "How to Handle a Child Abuse Case" on Wednesday, Oct. 24.

The Support Center for Child Advocates provides legal assistance and social service advocacy to abused and neglected children in Philadelphia County. Child Advocates is one of the most successful volunteer models serving children in the country. Each pro bono attorney is teamed with a staff case handler and assigned one child or sibling group. The child advocate team conducts home visits, participates in service planning meetings and court hearings. All volunteers must attend this full-day training program, which includes presentations on the Juvenile Act, the Child Protective Services Law, the role of a child advocate in a criminal case, representing parents in Dependency proceedings, service planning, and the dynamics of child abuse. Our training manual, "How to Handle A Child Abuse Case," with the latest Juvenile Act amendments and Juvenile Court rules, is provided to attendees. This course also provides certification for eligibility to receive court-appointed dependency cases.

Nuts and Bolts of Board Service CLE Oct. 26

The Young Lawyers Division and Philadelphia Bar Foundation will present the CLE program "The Nuts and Bolts of Board Service: An Introduction to Legal Issues for Nonprofits and Their Directors" on Friday, Oct. 26.

This CLE program will provide attorneys interested in serving on a nonprofit board an introduction to the role of the board of directors and the laws governing nonprofits, as well as offer overviews of nonprofit law and organization, related tax law, and fundraising. After the substantive CLE, participants are encouraged to remain for discussion with a panel comprised of board directors and executive directors who will share their experiences and give guidance to those who want to join a nonprofit board. The featured speaker is Marla Conley, who serves as director of The Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania and Prevent Child Abuse.

Philadelphia Celebrates 2012 National Pro Bono Week

Members of the Philadelphia legal community are invited to participate in a range of pro bono recruitment and recognition events, legal clinics for low-income clients, and continuing legal education programs that will be held during October in honor of the American Bar Association’s National Pro Bono Celebration.

The celebration is a coordinated national effort held during the week of Oct. 21-27 to encourage and support local efforts to expand the delivery of pro bono legal services. The Pro Bono Celebration in Philadelphia kicks off with a series of interactive "road Shows" offered by the Delivery of Legal Services Committee from Oct. 1-12 at area law firms and corporations. The road shows provide 30-minute workshops by public interest legal organizations about how to get involved in pro bono activities available in Philadelphia.

PTLA to Honor Chacker Oct. 4

The Philadelphia Trial Lawyers Association will present the 33rd Annual Justice Michael A. Musmanno Award to Edward F. Chacker, a former Chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association, on Thursday, Oct. 4.

Chacker has practiced law at Gay, Chacker & Mitten, P.C., for almost 40 years focusing on all aspects of personal injury including medical malpractice and civil rights litigation. Before receiving his Bachelor's degree from Temple University, he served in the Army Signal Corps for two years. He received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Toledo School of Law. He served as Chancellor of the Bar Association in 1999.

The award is presented annually to the person who best exemplifies the same high integrity, scholarship, imagination, courage, and concern for human rights as exhibited by the late Justice Michael A. Musmanno of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.

U.S./Ireland Legal Symposium Oct. 10-12

The Brehon Law Society is delighted to host its second annual U.S./Ireland Legal Symposium "Doing Business in the U.S./Ireland/Europe - Critical Legal Issues for U.S. and Irish Companies."

Meet the Federal Judges Reception Oct. 25

The Federal Bar Association will hold a "meet the judges" reception for the district judges and magistrate judges of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania on Thursday, Oct. 25.

Speakers include U.S. District Court Chief Judge J. Curtis Joyner; Frank McGovern, president elect of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania Chapter of the Federal Bar Association; and Robert DeSousa, national President of the Federal Bar Association.

The event begins at 4:30 p.m. in the ceremonial courtroom of the U.S. Courthouse at 6th and Market streets. The reception will follow in the Edward R. Becker lobby. FJD Seeks Applicants for Judicial Fellowship Program

Philadelphia judges are seeking to host law school graduates as judicial fellows to provide the graduates with substantive legal experience while benefitting the court system with additional legal talent, as part of the First Judicial District's Judicial Fellowship Program. The program was created in 2011 to address the difficult hiring climate for lawyers that many recent law graduates are facing. Participating law schools include the Earle Mack School of Law at Drexel University, the University of Pennsylvania Law School, Temple University Beasley School of Law, Rutgers University Law School, Villanova University School of Law, Penn State University Dickinson School of Law and Widener University School of Law but the judges welcome applicants from any accredited law school.

The Judicial Fellowship Program provides high-caliber law graduates professional development opportunities. At the same time, the judicial fellows help the busy court carry out key functions and maintain its superior quality of service to the Philadelphia community. Judicial fellows work in the civil, criminal, family and orphans divisions of the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas and Municipal Courts, carrying out the same duties as paid judicial clerks. The fellowships help recent graduates gain valuable experience and strengthen their marketability for obtaining a paid position in law. Judges select judicial fellows through an application process administered by the court. Each judge and fellow team designs a flexible schedule (minimum of 20 hours per week) that ensures reliable service to the judge but permits the fellow to seek a paid position elsewhere and to leave the fellowship with two weeks' notice upon obtaining paid employment.

Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas Judge Lisa M. Rau developed the program with help from Professor Chapin Cimino of the Earle Mack School of Law at Drexel University as well as faculty and administrators from career services offices at the University of Pennsylvania's Law School and Temple's Beasley School of Law. The Philadelphia Bar Association is a supporter of the Judicial Fellowship Program.

During the first year of the program's existence, 88 percent of the 30 judicial fellows left their fellowships having successfully secured paid positions.

• The Rutgers University School of Law Mary Philbrook Public Interest Awards Reception will be held Thursday, Oct. 4 at 6 p.m., at the Rutgers Camden Campus Center, 326 Penn St., Camden N.J. The 2012 Mary Philbrook Public Interest Award will be presented to Kevin Walsh, ’99, Associate Director, Fair Share Housing Center.
