"Nuts & Bolts" of Running for Elected Bar Positions Sept. 20

With the deadline for Nominations for the Philadelphia Bar Association Board of Governors Election just less than a month away (Oct. 5), now is the time to come learn what it takes to run for a seat on the Board!

Spend an hour on Thursday, Sept. 20 hearing from current Board members, officers, and the Association staff about the role of a Board of Governors member in the Philadelphia Bar Association and about the election process. The meeting begins at 12 p.m. in the 10th floor Board at the Bar Association, 1101 Market St.

Offices for which candidates are being solicited this year are Vice Chancellor; Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer (each office carries a one-year term); and five seats on the Board of Governors (each Board seat carries a three-year term).

Association members may become candidates for any of these offices by filing with the Secretary, on or before Oct. 5, 2012, nominations in writing which, for candidates of the Board, must be signed by at least 25 Members who are entitled to vote; for candidates for Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Secretary and Assistant Treasurer, shall be signed by at least 35 Members who are entitled to vote; and for candidates for Vice-Chancellor, shall be signed by at least 100 Members who are entitled to vote.

Bar Association Election Notice

The Philadelphia Bar Association has formed its Elections Committee which is chaired by Past Chancellor Rudolph Garcia and consists of Jeffrey Campolongo, Brian S. Chacker, Ourania Papademetriou, Scott W. Reid, Gina Furia Rubel, Louis S. Rulli, Melanie J. Taylor, H. Marc Tepper, Eric H. Weitz and Marc J. Zucker. Chancellor John E. Savoth, Chancellor-Elect Kathleen D. Wilkinson, and Vice Chancellor William P. Fedullo serve as ex-officio members. As Secretary, Sophia Lee serves as a non-voting member.

Offices for which candidates are being solicited are Vice Chancellor, Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer, and five seats on the Board of Governors. Each Board seat carries a three-year term.

Nonprofit Fundraising Sept. 17

The Young Lawyer Division, in conjunction with the Board Observation Program, will present a basic introduction to fundraising sources with C. Terrill Thompson on Monday, Sept. 17.

This session will also explore the role of board members in fundraising, barriers to making "the ask" and tips for successful fundraising. This session will also discuss the importance of integrating fundraising into other aspects of nonprofit organizations.

The Philadelphia Office of Emergency Management and the Philadelphia Police Department Homeland Security Unit will present a business continuity workshop on Tuesday, Sept. 18.

YLD Election Information Meeting Sept. 24

The Young Lawyers Division is now accepting nominations from any voting member of the YLD interested in serving a three-year term on the Executive Committee. This year's YLD Executive Committee election will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 4.

For those wishing to learn more about the YLD and the election process, an information session will be held on Monday, Sept. 24 at 12:30 pm in the 11th Floor Conference Center of the Philadelphia Bar Association, 1101 Market St.

Each year, seven new members are elected to the YLD Executive Committee. Any voting member of the YLD is eligible for election provided that the term of office for which the individual runs shall not extend beyond his or her membership in the Division. A member is eligible if he/she is 37-years-old or less in the year 2015 or, if he/she is older than 37, not celebrating more than his/her third year of practice in 2015.

The Executive Committee manages and directs the business and activities of the YLD's approximately 3,000 members, including oversight of more than 30 committees in the areas of public service, law-related education and service to the legal community. Being on the YLD Executive Committee provides lawyers opportunities for leadership, networking, and personal and professional growth early in their careers.

Top Energy Trends for Real Estate Lawyers

Bar Foundation Seeks Award Nominees

The Philadelphia Bar Foundation is soliciting nominations for two awards it presents each year.

The Philadelphia Bar Foundation Award was established to honor the memory of Louis D. Apothaker, a prominent Philadelphia attorney and past president of the Bar Foundation who was an outstanding leader within the legal profession and in the community. The award carries on this tradition and recognizes a public interest attorney who provides exceptional service to the non-profit legal services community.

The Pro Bono Award, first presented in 2003, is given annually to a Philadelphia law firm or corporate legal department that demonstrates outstanding volunteer efforts in providing legal services to those in need.

Pennsylvania Conference for Women Oct. 2

Brennan Award Nominations Being Accepted

Nominations are being accepted for the Philadelphia Bar Association's prestigious Justice William J. Brennan Jr. Distinguished Jurist Award. The award will be presented at the Association's Annual Meeting on Dec. 4.

The award recognizes a jurist who adheres to the highest ideals of judicial service. Any member of the state or federal bench, whether active or retired, who has made a significant, positive impact on the quality or administration of justice in Philadelphia is eligible for consideration. Examples of accomplishments worthy of nomination include innovations in court administration, implementation of pioneering case management techniques, assumption of a leadership role in areas affecting the administration of justice, publication of a significant opinion, article, or other scholarly work, or the like.

Michael F. Barrett is chairing this year's Brennan Award Committee. Fee Dispute Mediator Training Oct. 11

The Fee Dispute Committee will present Lawyer-Client Fee Dispute Resolution Program Volunteer Mediator Training on Thursday, Oct. 11.

The purpose of this mediator training is to prepare attorney mediators to volunteer for the Philadelphia Bar Association's Lawyer-Client Fee Dispute Resolution Program. If you are interested in mediation as a form of dispute resolution, would like to gain some valuable training, and would be willing to serve a few hours each year to help resolve a couple of lawyer-client fee disputes...then the Fee Disputes Committee would like you to consider becoming one of its volunteer mediators.

Nominations Sought for 2012 PNC Achievement Award

Nominations are being accepted for the 2012 PNC Achievement Award (formerly the Fidelity Award). Nominations should be made in writing. Please include a detailed statement setting forth information and reasons why you are recommending the nominee for this award. The deadline for receipt of nominations is Thursday, Oct. 11.

The criteria for the award are:

• Significant accomplishments in improving the administration of justice (preferably in Philadelphia);

• The absence of prior recognition for this work by the Philadelphia Bar Association;

• Distinguished service consistently rendered over a considerable period of time or a single outstanding achievement in a particular year. (The fact that this single achievement may have occurred some years ago is not material so long as it has not been recognized.);

• The accomplishment must arise from voluntary activities rather than for service rendered as a paid professional; and

• It is preferred that the recipient be a member of the Philadelphia Bar Association not now in public office or directly involved with court operations or any other public service activity.

Hamilton Award Nominations Due By Oct. 15

The Public Interest Section is now accepting nominations for the annual Andrew Hamilton Award. The deadline for nominations is Monday, Oct. 15.

Nominees must be a legal services advocate or public defender employed by, or associated with, an organization whose purpose is to serve persons who cannot afford to pay for legal representation, or be a public-interest lawyer working with a nonprofit organization serving a charitable or public interest purpose. In addition, nominees must have substantial experience in legal services, indigent defense or public interest law and must currently be employed in one of these capacities. Members of the selection committee will consider such factors as personal vision and commitment; critical nature of the problems addressed by the nominee's advocacy; innovative nature of the nominee's work; outcomes and results achieved through effective advocacy; the difficulty of achievement; and community commitment.

Nominations are encouraged and should include the individual's name, address and a brief statement describing his or her qualifications. APABA-PA Annual Banquet Oct. 12

The Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Pennsylvania will hold its annual banquet on Friday, Oct. 12 at Ocean Harbor Restaurant, 1023 Race St.

FJD Seeks Nominees for Pro Bono Roll of Honor

The First Judicial District is now accepting nominations for the Pro Bono Roll of Honor. To be eligible for the Roll of Honor, an attorney must be in private practice and must have provided pro bono services to a client or client group in a case pending before the FJD Municipal Court or Court of Common Pleas between Oct. 1, 2011 and Sept. 28, 2012.

Tribute to INTERPOL's Noble Sept. 28-29

The Greater Philadelphia Chapter of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives will present a gala and scholarship dinner in honor of INTERPOL Secretary General Ronald K. Noble on Friday, Sept. 28 .

Additionally, a free Greater Philadelphia Community Town Hall meeting "A Conversation with INTERPOL Secretary General Ronald K. Secretary General Noble's career began in Philadelphia as a clerk for U.S. Court of Appeals Judge A. Leon Higginbotham Jr. and as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the
Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Subsequently, he was appointed to positions as U.S. Department of Justice Deputy Attorney General and U.S. Treasury Undersecretary for Law Enforcement. As the Treasury Undersecretary for Law Enforcement, he oversaw four of the then-eight-largest law enforcement agencies which included the U.S. Secret Service, the U.S. Customs Service, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, and the Internal Revenue Service's Criminal Investigation Division. He led the study by the Waco Administrative Review Team that produced a report on the ATF's actions against the Branch Davidians leading to the Waco Siege.

Since becoming the Secretary General in 2000, he has orchestrated a period of unprecedented growth at INTERPOL. Within the last decade, the Organization has opened additional Regional Bureaus and liaison offices at the United Nations and the European Union and has pursued greater engagement with the African Union, Association of Southeast Asian Nations, Organization of American States and other regional bodies. Secretary General Noble has reinforced INTERPOL's legal status and relevance to the U.N. and the U.N. Security Council and has increased its law enforcement role in peacekeeping operations.

U.S./Ireland Legal Symposium Oct. 10-12

Meet the Federal Judges Reception Oct. 25

The Federal Bar Association will hold a "meet the judges" reception for the district judges and magistrate judges of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania on Thursday, Oct. 25.

Speakers include U.S. District Court Chief Judge J. Curtis Joyner; Frank McGovern, president elect of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania Chapter of the Federal Bar Association; and Robert DeSousa, national President of the Federal Bar Association.

PA Voter ID Coalition Seeks Volunteers

The Pennsylvania Voter ID Coalition is engaged in a non-partisan campaign to alert voters about the photo IDs they need to bring to the polls and to help them get a photo ID or other acceptable forms of identification for voting if they don't have one.

Volunteers are needed to help educate voters about the new requirements and for door-to-door canvassing, staffing phone banks, data entry and packet assembly at the new statewide Coalition Operations Center located at 310 W. Chelten Ave. in Germantown.

FJD Seeks Applicants for Judicial Fellowship Program

Philadelphia judges are seeking to host law school graduates as judicial fellows to provide the graduates with substantive legal experience while benefitting the court system with additional legal talent, as part of the First Judicial District's Judicial Fellowship Program. The program was created in 2011 to address the difficult hiring climate for lawyers that many recent law graduates are facing. Participating law schools include the Earle Mack School of Law at Drexel University, the University of Pennsylvania Law School, Temple University Beasley School of Law, Rutgers University Law School, Villanova University School of Law, Penn State University Dickinson School of Law and Widener University School of Law but the judges welcome applicants from any accredited law school.

The Judicial Fellowship Program provides high-caliber law graduates professional development opportunities. At the same time, the judicial fellows help the busy court carry out key functions and maintain its superior quality of service to the Philadelphia community. Judicial fellows work in the civil, criminal, family and orphans divisions of the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas and Municipal Courts, carrying out the same duties as paid judicial clerks. The fellowships help recent graduates gain valuable experience and strengthen their marketability for obtaining a paid position in law. Judges select judicial fellows through an application process administered by the court. Each judge and fellow team designs a flexible schedule (minimum of 20 hours per week) that ensures reliable service to the judge but permits the fellow to seek a paid position elsewhere and to leave the fellowship with two weeks' notice upon obtaining paid employment.

Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas Judge Lisa M. Rau developed the program with help from Professor Chapin Cimino of the Earle Mack School of Law at Drexel University as well as faculty and administrators from career services offices at the University of Pennsylvania's Law School and Temple's Beasley School of Law. The Philadelphia Bar Association is a supporter of the Judicial Fellowship Program.

During the first year of the program's existence, 88 percent of the 30 judicial fellows left their fellowships having successfully secured paid positions.

The Philadelphia Bar Association’s Delivery of Legal Services Committee is offering interactive "Road Shows" to highlight the pro bono opportunities available in Philadelphia on Oct. 1 through Oct. 5.
