The 31st Annual Philadelphia Bar Association 5K Run/Walk
for the Support Center for Child Advocates will be held Sunday, May 16 at 8:30 a.m. on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
There will be several competitive divisions with a 5K run competition for all runners, a 5K run competition for members of the Philadelphia Bar Association only. There will be both legal team competition and corporate team competition.

Reid on Bar's Diversity Efforts April 9

Business Development Skills Series Starts April 9
The Training Resource Group will present a series of programs to introduce business development skills to attorneys beginning on Friday, April 9.
The program is designed for attorneys who are now expected to develop business for themselves or their firms. Learn these essential skill sets that were never taught in law school.
The sessions will be held in the 11th floor Committee Room South of Bar Association headquarters, 1101 Market St., from 12 to 2 p.m. The April 9 session will cover building a network for business development and designing a business plan. The April 16 session will discuss the basics of networking and building a memorable 30-second commercial. On April 23, attendees will learn how to build a stronger network. The April 30 session will provide an introduction to a systematic approach to client development.

National Pro Bono Citizenship Weekend in Pennsylvania will be held Saturday, April 17 and Sunday, April 18. Attorneys who participate in citizenship day provide pro bono service working with at least one applicant, assisting the person complete the citizenship application. This year we are targeting eligible immigrants of limited means in Philadelphia (Saturday, April 17) and Allentown with our community and law school partners.
Fair Market Value Process April 15
The Health Care Law Committee will present "Fair Market Value Process and Pitfalls: A Practical Approach" with Clifford Simmons on Thursday, April 15.
Simmons will discuss areas of health care compliance that involve the determination of "fair market value," focusing on many of the various FMV engagements and the associated issues and challenges.

Mortgage Foreclosure Diversion Training April 16
The Residential Mortgage Foreclosure Diversion Program, instituted in April 2008 by the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas, has provided hundreds of homeowners an opportunity to negotiate face to face with lenders' representatives to save their homes from foreclosure.
Judge Annette M. Rizzo and Philadelphia VIP are asking attorneys to volunteer for the Philadelphia Foreclosure Rescue Effort (Philly FReE). VIP administers the pro bono legal assistance component of Philly FReE, providing training and ongoing support to attorneys who wish to contribute their time to this important effort. Since the inception of the program in June 2008, more than 350 attorneys have been trained. Those attorneys have helped more than 1,400 homeowners save their homes and provided valuable assistance or in attaining a "graceful exit."
The mortgage foreclosure diversion program needs the investment of many pro bono attorneys to help clients negotiate an affordable loan modification, payment arrangement, or other workout option.
Here's how you can get involved. Volunteers can receive one CLE credit for each hour of course work attended (three hours total) by representing two different clients from one or more mortgage foreclosure conciliation conferences on a continuing basis until the attempted negotiation is resolved, or volunteering as an on-call attorney at three different conciliation conference half-day sessions. This must occur within six months of the training session.
The next training session will be held Friday, April 16, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at PECO/Exelon, 2301 Market St. The presenters will be Alfonso Madrid, Robin Brunson and Andrea Saah. The training will consist of a panel presentation and a participatory case study. Breakfast will be provided by PECO/Exelon. You will receive three free hours of CLE if you fulfill the CLE requirements described above.

Avoiding Medicare Problems When Settling Cases
The Workers' Compensation Section will present the lunchtime CLE "Avoiding Medicare Problems When Settling Your Cases" on Wednesday, April 21.
The featured panelist for the program is James E. Pocius. This CLE program will address Medicare Part D Coverage which went into effect in 2006 and the issues that arise when attempting to settle a case involving Medicare benefits. The presentation will also include a discussion of Medicare set-asides. Other topics to be discussed include Medicare's interests in settlements; update on Medicare recovery cases; SCHIP Reporting; and settlement strategies.

Ginsburg Legal Writing Competition Entries Due May 10
Entries are being accepted for the Philadelphia Bar Association's Eighth Annual "Pursuit of Justice" Legal Writing Competition in honor of the Honorable Ruth Bader Ginsburg, associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
The competition is open to full- and part-time law students who are in their second or third year of study during the 2009-2010 academic year at one of the following schools: Drexel University Earle Mack School of Law, University of Pennsylvania Law School, Rutgers University School of Law - Camden, Temple University Beasley School of Law, Villanova University School of Law and Widener University School of Law (Delaware Campus).

The Bar Association recognizes the importance of excellence in legal analysis and writing skills, and seeks to award a student enrolled in an American Bar Association-approved area law school for authoring a top-quality competition submission.
Part-time law students in their third or later year of study are also eligible. Students must be in good standing at their institutions. The submission may not have been published previously, although it may have been prepared in connection with a law school course or for a law journal. The submission also may not have been submitted for any other competition during the time when it is under consideration for this competition, until after the time when awards are announced. The submission must be the work of one author alone (joint submissions will not be considered), and the author must certify that the submission has been prepared without substantial editing from others.
Candidates may submit a law review quality submission on any topic relating to rights, privileges and responsibilities under federal law. The author of the winning submission will receive a cash award of $2,500, the publication of the winning submission on the Bar Association's Web site and/or in an appropriate Bar Association publication. The winner will be presented with the award at the Association's Quarterly Meeting in October.

Sen. Michael Stack to Speak May 12
Pennsylvania state Sen. Michael Stack of the 5th District will address "From the National Guard to Guarding our Tax Dollars: A Public Servant's Role" at the Wednesday, May 12 meeting of the Government and Public Service Lawyers Committee.
Sen. Stack was elected to his third term in the state Senate in November 2008. His district includes Northeast Philadelphia, Port Richmond, Bridesburg and Kensington. He serves as a captain in the armed forces in the Pennsylvania National Guard. He graduated from the Officers Basic Course competing with soldiers 20 years his junior. Sen. Stack serves as Democratic Vice Chair of the Appropriations Committee and Democratic Chair of the Banking and Insurance Committee.

Justinians to Celebrate 75th Anniversary April 11
The Justinian Society of Philadelphia will host a 75th Anniversary celebration on Sunday, April 11 from 3 to 7 p.m. at The Atrium at the Curtis Center, 601 Walnut St., Philadelphia. Holocaust Remembrance Day Program April 14

The Louis D. Brandeis Law Society has invited Shoah Survivor Sol Finkelstein and his son, Joe Finkelstein, to discuss their recent book, I Choose Life
, which recounts Sol and Goldie Finkelsteins' Holocaust survival experiences. Joe Finkelstein, a Brandeis Law Society member, helped his parents write a memoir of their experiences as Shoah survivors. Judith Bernstein Baker of The Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS) will also speak.

FJD E-Filing Training Session April 22
The First Judicial District will hold a training session on electronic filing on Thursday, April 22.
Electronic filing of all civil matters became mandatory in January 2009. This program will provide in-depth instruction on the use of the electronic filing system. It was designed to allow for the filing of all civil cases and legal document via the Internet from anywhere at any time. The system currently provides attorneys and litigants with unlimited online access to all papers and legal documents filed in their cases.
The faculty for the program includes President Judge Pamela Pryor Dembe, Administrative Judge D. Webster Keogh, Supervising Judge William J. Manfredi, Deputy Court Administrator Charles A. Mapp Sr., Deputy Court Administrator Dominic J. Rossi, Prothonotary Joseph H. Evers, and Deputy Prothonotary Deborah E. Dailey, along with Harold Palmer, director of application systems development and Steven Wulko from quality assurance.

Women in Law Leadership Academy April 29-30
The American Bar Association Commission on Women and Young Lawyers Division will present the fourth Women in Law Leadership (WILL) Academy on April 29-30 in Philadelphia. Realize your leadership potential, learn how to develop business and take your career to the next level.

Gary Papa Run 4 Your Life June 20
The Ninth Annual Gary Papa Run 4 Your Life will be held Sunday, June 20, sponsored by Prostate Health International, in partnership with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 98 and 6ABC-TV.
The 5K walk/run promotes prostate cancer awareness and research and to support a program of free screenings and educational programs to men in the Delaware Valley. The event is named in honor of Gary Papa, a longtime sportscaster with 6ABC, who lost his battle with prostate cancer last June.
