U.S. Supreme Court Admission Deadline Today

The Philadelphia Bar Association will move up to 50 of our members for admission to the Bar of the United States Supreme Court on Monday, May 17. The admission ceremony will be made to the full court sitting in Washington, D.C.

The court's requirements for a group admission ceremony are very comprehensive. To review these requirements and to download the forms for admission please visit the Supreme Court's Web site at supremecourtus.gov. Select the Bar Admissions tab on the left-hand side and this will bring you to the link for the Bar Admissions Form and Bar Admissions Instructions. Please read the instructions carefully. Once you have determined that you are eligible for admission, please print out and complete the Admission Form. The instructions and guidelines are very specific and must be followed scrupulously. Do not fold the application or use staples. Use paper clips only.

Once you have successfully completed the Admission Form, please mail it along with a check made payable to the Philadelphia Bar Association. The cost to attend the ceremony is $225, which includes your application fee and a continental breakfast. Please include an additional $25 if you plan to bring a guest. Per the Supreme Court's rule, each inductee is permitted to bring only one guest. Bar Academy Presents Soccer Program with Union Today

Major League Soccer is coming to Philadelphia and Association members have the opportunity to get a first-hand look at the city's newest professional sports franchise today (Monday, March 29) as part of the new Philadelphia Bar Association Academy.

Philadelphia Union President Tom Veit, Nick Sakiewicz, CEO and operating partner of the Philadelphia Union and Keystone Sports and Entertainment LLC, and Carl Cherkin, the team's vice president of communications, will address Bar Association members at The CLE Conference Center on the 10th floor of the Wanamaker Building, Market and Juniper streets, from 12 to 1:30 p.m. In this exclusive session, members will get a virtual preview of the Union's new 18,500-seat stadium in Delaware County and learn the basics of soccer. There will also be a raffle of Philadelphia Union gear to members of the audience.

The Philadelphia Bar Association Academy, launched this year by Chancellor Scott F. Cooper, is a new civic and cultural education series for members of the Association. Academy programs enable members to greater connect with many of the city's most vibrant institutions through exclusive, behind-the-scenes access.

Dialogue on Municipal Court Changes March 30

The Criminal Justice Section will present "Changes in Municipal Court: A Dialogue" at its Tuesday, March 30 meeting.

Panelists will include Daniel-Paul Alva; First Assistant Defender Charles A. Cunningham; and a representative from the District Attorney's Office. Among the issues to be discussed:

• Whether live witnesses should be required at preliminary hearings or if using live witnesses should be dispensed with and police reports used instead.

• Whether discovery (police reports) should be furnished to defense counsel prior to preliminary hearings.

• Should Philadelphia County be compared with other counties in the state? Are techniques used in other counties applicable to Philadelphia?

Pinkenson to Address YLD Annual Meeting March 31

Sharon Pinkenson, executive director of the Greater Philadelphia Film Office, is the keynote speaker at the Young Lawyers Division Annual Meeting on Wednesday, March 31.

Perry Award will be presented to Lloyd Freeman from Archer & Greiner, P.C. The F. Reception for International LL.M. Students April 8

The International Law Committee will hold a reception in honor of the International LL.M. Students in Philadelphia on Thursday, April 8 at 6 p.m. at the offices of Fox Rothschild LLP, 2000 Market St., 20th floor.

At the reception, the committee will present its annual International Law Awards to two international LL.M. students for outstanding achievement in the fields of international law or human rights. Business Development Skills Series Starts April 9

The Training Resource Group will present a series of programs to introduce business development skills to attorneys beginning on Friday, April 9.

The program is designed for attorneys who are now expected to develop business for themselves or their firms. Learn these essential skill sets that were never taught in law school.

The sessions will be held in the 11th floor Committee Room South of Bar Association headquarters, 1101 Market St., from 12 to 2 p.m. The April 9 session will cover building a network for business development and designing a business plan. The April 16 session will discuss the basics of networking and building a memorable 30-second commercial. On April 23, attendees will learn how to build a stronger network. The April 30 session will provide an introduction to a systematic approach to client development.

Bankruptcy Law and Practice for Students April 21

The Business Law Section and Bankruptcy Law Committee will present "Focus on Bankruptcy Law and Practice," part of its Practicing Business Law Series for Law Students on Wednesday, April 21.

Lunch Program on Submitting to Editorial Pages April 22

The Association's Bar-News Media Committee will host "How and When to Share Your Opinion with the Press - Submitting to Editorial Pages" on Thursday, April 22.

Members will hear from editorial page editors from several area newspapers. Panelists will include Bernard Dagenais, editor of the Philadelphia Business Journal; Hank Grezlak, associate publisher and editor-in-chief of The Legal Intelligencer; Lisa Hostein, executive editor, Jewish Exponent; Irv Randolph, managing editor of The Philadelphia Tribune; Idelle Howitt, managing editor, Metropolitan Corporate Counsel; and Guy Petroziello, editorial page editor, Bucks County Courier Times. Additional panelists will be announced.

The panel will answer questions regarding what they are looking for in terms of commentary, how best to contact them and build relationships, the types of stories that catch their attention and what not to do or say when communicating with the media.

Volunteers Needed for Earth Day Event April 24

The Philadelphia Bar Association will mark the 40th anniversary of Earth Day by planting trees on the morning of Saturday, April 24.

Bar Association's 31st Annual 5K Run/Walk May 16

The 31st Annual Philadelphia Bar Association 5K Run/Walk for the Support Center for Child Advocates will be held Sunday, May 16 at 8:30 a.m. on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

There will be several competitive divisions with a 5K run competition for all runners, a 5K run competition for members of the Philadelphia Bar Association only. There will be both legal team competition and corporate team competition.

• The Second Annual Rutgers Law School Public Interest Evening Auction will be held Thursday, April 1 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Faculty Lounge, 4th floor, East Building, 217 N. Fifth St. The auction raises funds for summer stipends, awarded to students working in unpaid public interest summer positions. Past employers include Women Against Abuse, Senior Law Center, South Jersey Legal Services, and the Camden County Prosecutor's Office. • Philadelphia VIP will host a CLE training program on how to handle a case in the Mortgage Foreclosure Diversion Project, the mandatory negotiation program operated by the First Judicial District. The event will be held Friday, April 16 at PECO/Exelon, 2301 Market St. A free continental breakfast will be served from 8:30 to 9 a.m. The CLE training program will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Volunteers will receive one free CLE credit for each hour of course work attended (a total of three free CLE credits are available) in exchange for representing two different clients at one or more mortgage foreclosure conciliation conferences on a continuing basis until the attempted negotiation is resolved, or in exchange for volunteering as an on-call attorney at three different conciliation conference half-day sessions. Rutgers Law Hosting Reentry Conference April 8

Rutgers University Law School-Camden will hold the conference, "Back to the Community: Making Systems Work for Reentry," on Thursday, April 8 from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., at the Law School, 217 North 5th St., Camden, N.J.

Join local, regional and national leaders for a discussion on how government agencies and not-for-profit programs can better serve those on parole or probation as well as the communities and families to which they return. Panels of practitioners, policy makers, and researchers will tackle the challenges of systemic coordination and partnership from sentencing through incarceration and release, with particular emphasis on how reentry impacts our urban centers.

Holocaust Remembrance Day Program April 14

Please join the Louis D. Brandeis Law Society on Wednesday, April 14 from 12 to 1:30 p.m. to commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day.

The Louis D. Brandeis Law Society has invited Shoah Survivor Sol Finkelstein and his son, Joe Finkelstein, to discuss their recent book, I Choose Life, which recounts Sol and Goldie Finkelsteins' Holocaust survival experiences. Joe Finkelstein, a Brandeis Law Society member, helped his parents write a memoir of their experiences as Shoah survivors. Judith Bernstein Baker of The Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS) will also speak.

The discussion (with book signing) will be held at the law firm of Blank Rome LLP, One Logan Square, 130 N. 18th St. Lunch will be provided courtesy of Blank Rome.

The program will also qualify for one hour of substantive CLE credit, which will be complimentary for Brandeis members and $36 for non-members.

Brandeis Foundation Scholarship Luncheon April 20

The Louis D. Brandeis Law Society Foundation will have its Second Annual Scholarship Luncheon on Tuesday, April 20, at 12 p.m. at the Union League of Philadelphia, Broad and Sansom streets.

The Third Annual Hon. Abraham J. Gafni Award will be presented, and the Second Annual Hon. Sandra Mazer Moss Award will also be presented to deserving law students selected from the five area law schools.

FJD E-Filing Training Session April 22

The First Judicial District will hold a training session on electronic filing on Thursday, April 22.

Electronic filing of all civil matters became mandatory in January 2009. This program will provide in-depth instruction on the use of the electronic filing system. It was designed to allow for the filing of all civil cases and legal document via the Internet from anywhere at any time. The system currently provides attorneys and litigants with unlimited online access to all papers and legal documents filed in their cases.

The faculty for the program includes President Judge Pamela Pryor Dembe, Administrative Judge D. Webster Keogh, Supervising Judge William J. Manfredi, Deputy Court Administrator Charles A. Mapp Sr., Deputy Court Administrator Dominic J. Rossi, Prothonotary Joseph H. Evers, and Deputy Prothonotary Deborah E. Dailey, along with Harold Palmer, director of application systems development and Steven Wulko from quality assurance.

Gary Papa Run 4 Your Life June 20

The Ninth Annual Gary Papa Run 4 Your Life will be held Sunday, June 20, sponsored by Prostate Health International, in partnership with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 98 and 6ABC-TV.

The 5K walk/run promotes prostate cancer awareness and research and to support a program of free screenings and educational programs to men in the Delaware Valley. The event is named in honor of Gary Papa, a longtime sportscaster with 6ABC, who lost his battle with prostate cancer last June.

Live from the Practising Law Institute, it's "Asset-Based Financing in Today's Economy."
