Deadline Today for O'Connor Award Nominees

The Women in the Profession Committee is seeking nominations for the 2010 Sandra Day O'Connor Award. Deadline for nominations is today, March 22.

The award is conferred annually on a woman attorney who has demonstrated superior legal talent, achieved significant legal accomplishments and has furthered the advancement of women in both the profession and the community. The award presentation will be made during the June Quarterly Meeting.

The committee established the award in 1993 to recognize the important contributions that women attorneys in Philadelphia have made to the legal profession. Click here to download a nomination form. Private Equity and Venture Capital CLE March 23

The Private Equity and Venture Capital Committee will present the CLE program "Using S-Corp ESOPs as Exit Transactions for Private Equity Firms" on Tuesday, March 23.

Featured speaker John L. Miscione will cover a review of the application of "S" corporation ESOPs for corporate spin-offs and as an alternative exit strategy for portfolio companies of private equity investors. The program has been approved for 1.0 substantive CLE credit. Participants wishing to receive the CLE credit will be required to pay a fee of $33.50 for members of the Philadelphia Bar Association admitted for more than five years, and $28.50 for members of the Philadelphia Bar Association admitted for less than five years. Workers' Comp CLE on Chronic Pain March 24

The Workers' Compensation Section will present the lunchtime CLE "Evaluating Chronic Pain for Workers' Compensation Cases - Understanding the AMA Guides to Permanency Impairment" on Wednesday, March 24.

Panelists for the program include Dr. Gladys Fenichel, a psychiatrist, and Dr. Wilhelmina Korevaar, an anesthesiologist and pain management specialist.

Federal Court Discovery Disputes CLE March 25

U.S. District Court Judges Gene E.K. Pratter and Lawrence F. Stengel and U.S. Magistrate Judge L. Felipe Restrepo will be among the panelists for the lunchtime CLE "Federal Court Discovery Disputes: A View from the Bench" on Thursday, March 25.

The judges will offer their views on discovery disputes in federal court, including their procedures for resolution of these disputes. They will highlight what is expected of counsel in handling discovery issues, advice for practitioners, as well as offer tips for young lawyers. The program is sponsored by the Federal Courts Committee and the Young Lawyers Division. Course planners are Jonathan Scott Goldman and Stephanie J. Mensing. Additional faculty may be added.

U.S. Supreme Court Admission Deadline March 29

The Philadelphia Bar Association will move up to 50 of our members for admission to the Bar of the United States Supreme Court on Monday, May 17. The admission ceremony will be made to the full court sitting in Washington, D.C.

The court's requirements for a group admission ceremony are very comprehensive. To review these requirements and to download the forms for admission please visit the Supreme Court's Web site at supremecourtus.gov. Select the Bar Admissions tab on the left-hand side and this will bring you to the link for the Bar Admissions Form and Bar Admissions Instructions. Please read the instructions carefully. Once you have determined that you are eligible for admission, please print out and complete the Admission Form. The instructions and guidelines are very specific and must be followed scrupulously. Do not fold the application or use staples. Use paper clips only.

Once you have successfully completed the Admission Form, please mail it along with a check made payable to the Philadelphia Bar Association. The cost to attend the ceremony is $225 which includes your application fee and a continental breakfast. Please include an additional $25 if you plan to bring a guest. Per the Supreme Court's rule, each inductee is permitted to bring only one guest. Please send payment to: Attn: Dawn Petit, Philadelphia Bar Association, 1101 Market St., 11th Floor, Philadelphia, PA 19107. Do not send the application directly to the Supreme Court.

The event will be on a first-come, first-served basis and all applications must be received by 5 p.m. on Monday, March 29, 2010.

Bar Academy Presents Soccer Program with Union March 29

Major League Soccer is coming to Philadelphia and Association members have the opportunity to get a first-hand look at the city's newest professional sports franchise on Monday, March 29 as part of the new Philadelphia Bar Association Academy. Click here to register.

Sharon Pinkenson, executive director of the Greater Philadelphia Film Office, is the keynote speaker at the Young Lawyers Division Annual Meeting on Wednesday, March 31.

Business Development Skills Series Starts April 9

The Training Resource Group will present a series of programs to introduce business development skills to attorneys beginning on Friday, April 9.

The program is designed for attorneys who are now expected to develop business for themselves or their firms. Learn these essential skill sets that were never taught in law school.

The sessions will be held in the 11th floor Committee Room South of Bar Association headquarters, 1101 Market St., from 12 to 2 p.m. The April 9 session will cover building a network for business development and designing a business plan. The April 16 session will discuss the basics of networking and building a memorable 30-second commercial. On April 23, attendees will learn how to build a stronger network. The April 30 session will provide an introduction to a systematic approach to client development.

Volunteers Needed for Earth Day Event April 24

The Philadelphia Bar Association will mark the 40th anniversary of Earth Day by planting trees on the morning of Saturday, April 24.

Please join the Green Ribbon Task Force in helping make Philadelphia greener. We will be planting root trees at one or more locations in Philadelphia and no experience or heavy lifting is necessary. The Second Annual Rutgers Law School Public Interest Evening Auction will be held Thursday, April 1 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Faculty Lounge, 4th floor, East Building, 217 N. Bar Association's 31st Annual 5K Run/Walk May 16

The 31st Annual Philadelphia Bar Association 5K Run/Walk for the Support Center for Child Advocates will be held Sunday, May 16 at 8:30 a.m. on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

There will be several competitive divisions with a 5K run competition for all runners, a 5K run competition for members of the Philadelphia Bar Association only. There will be both legal team competition and corporate team competition.

Holocaust Remembrance Day Program April 14

Please join the Louis D. Brandeis Law Society on Wednesday, April 14 from 12 to 1:30 p.m. to commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day.

The Louis D. Brandeis Law Society has invited Shoah Survivor Sol Finkelstein and his son, Joe Finkelstein, to discuss their recent book, I Choose Life, which recounts Sol and Goldie Finkelsteins' Holocaust survival experiences. Joe Finkelstein, a Brandeis Law Society member, helped his parents write a memoir of their experiences as Shoah survivors. Judith Bernstein Baker of The Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS) will also speak.

The discussion (with book signing) will be held at the law firm of Blank Rome LLP, One Logan Square, 130 N. 18th St. Lunch will be provided courtesy of Blank Rome.

The program will also qualify for one hour of substantive CLE credit, which will be complimentary for Brandeis members and $36 for non-members.

Brandeis Foundation Scholarship Luncheon April 20

The Louis D. Brandeis Law Society Foundation will have its Second Annual Scholarship Luncheon on Tuesday, April 20, at 12 p.m. at the Union League of Philadelphia, Broad and Sansom streets.

The Third Annual Hon. Abraham J. Gafni Award will be presented, and the Second Annual Hon. Sandra Mazer Moss Award will also be presented to deserving law students selected from the five area law schools.

FJD E-Filing Training Session April 22

The First Judicial District will hold a training session on electronic filing on Thursday, April 22.

Electronic filing of all civil matters became mandatory in January 2009. This program will provide in-depth instruction on the use of the electronic filing system. It was designed to allow for the filing of all civil cases and legal document via the Internet from anywhere at any time. The system currently provides attorneys and litigants with unlimited online access to all papers and legal documents filed in their cases.

The faculty for the program includes President Judge Pamela Pryor Dembe, Administrative Judge D. Webster Keogh, Supervising Judge William J. Manfredi, Deputy Court Administrator Charles A. Mapp Sr., Deputy Court Administrator Dominic J. Rossi, Prothonotary Joseph H. Evers, and Deputy Prothonotary Deborah E. Dailey, along with Harold Palmer, director of application systems development and Steven Wulko from quality assurance.

Women in Law Leadership Academy April 29-30

The American Bar Association Commission on Women and Young Lawyers Division will present the fourth Women in Law Leadership (WILL) Academy on April 29-30 in Philadelphia. Realize your leadership potential, learn how to develop business and take your career to the next level.

The WILL Academy empowers and trains women lawyers to achieve success and leadership skills. You will receive practical advice from and have the opportunity to network with prominent judges, general counsels and practitioners from around the country. You will participate in a number of interactive and highly informative programs that address a wide range of important and cutting-edge subjects.

Celebrate 20 Years of Komen Race for the Cure

At the first Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure in 1991, there were 1,983 registered participants, fundraising barely broke even and there was no Survivors Parade of Pink.

Last year, more than 100,000 people filled Eakins Oval for the event, which raised over $3.5 million and welcomed more than 6,000 victorious breast cancer survivors in the Parade of Pink! Gary Papa Run 4 Your Life June 20

The Ninth Annual Gary Papa Run 4 Your Life will be held Sunday, June 20, sponsored by Prostate Health International, in partnership with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 98 and 6ABC-TV.

The 5K walk/run promotes prostate cancer awareness and research and to support a program of free screenings and educational programs to men in the Delaware Valley. The event is named in honor of Gary Papa, a longtime sportcaster with 6ABC, who lost his battle with prostate cancer last June.

Land Use Institute 2010 March 26-27

The Land Use Institute – 2010 is a two-day seminar with Friday lunch and cocktail hour and Saturday morning "breakfast roundtables" providing the opportunity to network with your colleagues. This seminar tackles topics of interest for the beginner as well as the experienced practitioner. This 9 substantive, 1 ethics CLE credit hour program will be a held Friday and Saturday, March 26 and 27 at The CLE Conference Center on the 10th floor of the Wanamaker Building, Juniper Street entrance (between 13th and Broad streets, opposite City Hall).
