Register for Bar Association 5K May 15

Registration is now available for the 32nd Annual Philadelphia Bar Association 5K Run/Walk which will be held Sunday, May 15 on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive adjacent to the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

While the 5KRun/Walk offers friendly individual competition for runners in 16 age categories for both male and female competitors in both Bar Association and non-Bar Association categories, the competition also includes the Caesar, Rivise, Bernstein, Cohen & Pokotilow Legal Team Competition for participating law firms. This legal team competition is fun for all participants because of its unique scoring system that allows teams with diverse age and gender classifications to be competitive with each another. A team's score is based on the individual rankings of the team members who do best in their individual age and gender classifications based on the finishing times of only the legal team competitors. A legal team includes between three and five members who must be bona fide full-time or part-time employees of the firm, so paralegals, law clerks and legal secretaries are encouraged to join attorneys on legal teams. The highly sought after trophy bowls are awarded to the top three legal teams. The entry fee for each legal team is a $400 contribution to Child Advocates and all team competitors also receive an exclusive team competitor T-shirt for having completed the event.

Using Trusts in Estate Plan Today

The Pennsylvania Bar Institute will present the CLE program "Using Trusts as Building Blocks for Your Client's Estate Plan" today (Thursday, March 10).

Open Forum on Current State, Future of CLE March 14

As we approach the 20th anniversary of mandatory CLE in Pennsylvania, join the Professional Responsibility Committee for a forum where you can voice your opinions and concerns about the current state and future of CLE in Pennsylvania on Monday, March 14.

The following topics will be addressed: What works and what doesn't? Are changes necessary? Are the requirements sufficient or excessive? Is experienced-based CLE an appropriate approach and will it help to raise the overall quality of legal representation provided to all clients? Should more online CLE be allowed? Does attendees' multi-tasking - newspapers, mobile devices - impact the effectiveness of CLE? Are the consequences of non-compliance too draconian?

Panelists for the program include past Chancellor Abraham C. Reich, co-chair and partner of Fox Rothschild, LLP, and current Chair of the Pennsylvania Continuing Legal Education Board; Dan Levering, administrator of the Pennsylvania Continuing Legal Education Board; and Sarah Woods, executive director of Philadelphia VIP which provides free CLE credit for those who take approved courses and agree to provide pro bono representation.

Antitrust Law Committee CLE March 15

The Antitrust Law Committee will present the CLE program "DeBeers: Class Action Settlements in Antitrust Cases" on Tuesday, March 15.

Panelists Howard J. Bashman, Eric L. Cramer, Neil C. Schur and Joanne Zack will discuss court approval of class action settlements and in particular the DeBeers case currently pending before the Third Circuit Court of Appeals.

The program has been approved for 1 substantive CLE credit. Participants wishing to receive the CLE credit will be required to pay a fee of $33.50 for members of the Philadelphia Bar Association admitted for more than five years and $28.50 for members of the Philadelphia Bar Association admitted for less than five years. Title Issues for Distressed Real Estate March 16

The Financing & Securitization of Real Estate Committee will discuss title issues for distressed real estate at its Wednesday, March 16 meeting.

Former Political Prisoner to Speak March 22

Alicia Rodriguez, a Puerto Rican nationalist and former political prisoner, will discuss her arrest in 1980 and her federal trial for seditious conspiracy to overthrow the United States government which culminated in a sentence of 55 years at a March 22 program sponsored by the Civil Rights Committee, Women's Rights Committee, Criminal Justice Section, National Lawyers Guild and the Hispanic Bar Association of Pennsylvania.

Throughout her trial, Alicia Rodriguez and other Armed Forces of National Liberation (FALN) members declared themselves to be combatants and invoked prisoner of war status due to the unlawful occupation of the island of Puerto Rico. Rodriguez and 9 other prisoners were ultimately extended offers of clemency from President Clinton in 1999.

Barkann to Speak at YLD Annual Meeting April 14

Michael Barkann, a five-time Philadelphia Sports Emmy Award winner and host of Comacast SportsNet's "Daily News Live," will present the keynote speech at the Young Lawyers Division Annual Meeting on Thursday, April 14 at 12 p.m. at the Crystal Tea Room on the 9th Floor of the Wanamaker Building, Market and Juniper streets.

The event will also feature the conferral of the F. Sean Peretta Service Award and the Craig M. Perry Service Award as well as the YLD Vision Award. Feinberg to Speak at April 28 Chancellor's Forum

Kenneth R. Feinberg, President Obama's compensation chief and administrator of the federal 9/11 fund - which distributed nearly $7 billion to more than 5,000 survivors and families of victims - as well as the gulf oil spill fund, will be the featured speaker at a Thursday, April 28 Chancellor's Forum presented by the Business Law Section. Feinberg was named by President Obama in June 2010 as the independent administrator of a $20 billion fund set up by BP to compensate victims of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. He was appointed by the Secretary of the Treasury in 2009 to serve as the Special Master for TARP Executive Compensation.

Feinberg was the fund administrator responsible for the design, implementation and administration of the claims process for the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund following the tragic shootings at Virginia Tech University in April 2007. Women in Profession Committee Seeks Bloggers

The Women in the Profession Committee is looking for volunteers to contribute bi-weekly submissions to the Committee’s blog. From the professional to the personal, if you have something interesting to say then we want to hear from you. Topics can include but are not limited to practical advice in your practice area, tips for success, personal reflections, work/life balance, and entertainment.

Get Admitted to U.S. Supreme Court May 23

The Philadelphia Bar Association will move up to 50 of our members for admission to the Bar of the United States Supreme Court on Monday, May 23. The admission ceremony will be made to the full court sitting in Washington, D.C.

The court's requirements for a group admission ceremony are very comprehensive. To review these requirements and to download the forms for admission please visit the Supreme Court's website at supremecourtus.gov. Select the Bar Admissions tab on the left-hand side and this will bring you to the link for the Bar Admissions Form and Bar Admissions Instructions. Please read the instructions carefully. Once you have determined that you are eligible for admission, please print out and complete the Admission Form. The instructions and guidelines are very specific and must be followed scrupulously. Do not fold the application or use staples. Use paper clips only.

Once you have successfully completed the Admission Form, please mail it along with a check made payable to the Philadelphia Bar Association. The cost to attend the ceremony is $225 which includes your application fee and a continental breakfast. Please include an additional $25 if you plan to bring a guest. Per the Supreme Court's rule, each inductee is permitted to bring only one guest. Please send payment to: Attn: Dawn Petit, Philadelphia Bar Association, 1101 Market St., 11th Floor, Philadelphia, PA 19107. Do not send the application directly to the Supreme Court.

Entries Sought for Ginsburg Legal Writing Competition

Entries are now being accepted for the Philadelphia Bar Association's 2011 Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Pursuit of Justice Legal Writing Competition.

The co-chairs of the competition are Bar Association Vice Chancellor Kathleen D. Wilkinson, partner at Wilson Elser Moskowitz Edelman and Dicker LLP and Diane Penneys Edelman, Assistant Dean for International Programs, Associate Professor of Legal Writing, Villanova University School of Law.

The Bar Association recognizes the importance of excellence in legal analysis and writing skills, and seeks to award a student enrolled in an American Bar Association-approved or provisionally approved Philadelphia-area law school for authoring a top-quality competition submission.

This competition is open to full- and part-time law students who are in their second or third year of study during the 2010-11 academic year at one of the following six institutions: Drexel University Earle Mack School of Law, University of Pennsylvania Law School, Rutgers University School of Law - Camden, Temple University Beasley School of Law, Villanova University School of Law and Widener University School of Law (Delaware Campus). Part-time law students in their third or later year of study are also eligible. Students must be in good standing at their institutions. The submission may not have been published previously, although it may have been prepared in connection with a law school course or for a law journal. The submission also may not have been submitted for any other competition during the time when it is under consideration for this competition, until after the time when awards are announced. The submission must be the work of one author alone (joint submissions will not be considered), and the author must certify that the submission has been prepared without substantial editing from others.

Candidates may submit a law review quality submission on any topic relating to rights, privileges and responsibilities under federal law. Entries must be received by Monday, May 9 at 4 p.m.

The author of the winning submission will receive a cash award of $2,500, the publication of the winning submission in The Philadelphia Lawyer, on the Bar Association's website and/or in an appropriate Bar Association publication. The winner will be invited to a Quarterly Meeting of the Bar Association, at which time the award will be presented.

YLD Casino Night Fundraiser May 14

Play exciting games of poker, blackjack, craps and roulette at the Young Lawyers Division's brand-new Casino Night and Annual Fundraiser benefiting the Philadelphia Bar Foundation on Saturday, May 14 at the Radisson Plaza-Warwick Hotel from 7 to 10:30 p.m.

The event also features an open bar, a generous dinner buffet, a DJ, and a big ticket raffle.

Registration is $75 per ticket and $135 for two. One ticket includes $200 worth of chips to use at seven blackjack tables, three poker tables, a craps table and a double roulette table. Chips can be exchanged for raffle tickets toward a host of spectacular items to be auctioned off at the event.

All proceeds benefit the Philadelphia Bar Foundation, which is dedicated to promoting access to justice for all people, particularly those struggling with poverty, abuse and discrimination. Since 2006, the YLD's annual fundraiser - which traditionally featured a renowned comedian and a silent auction - has raised more than $313,000 for the Foundation.

Association Launching Classified Advertising Online

Attorneys looking for jobs and employers looking to fill vacancies will have a new resource available on the Philadelphia Bar Association website.

To help launch the new section of the website (classifieds.philadelphiabar.org), a special introductory price of $39 per advertisement has been announced. The $39 price per ad will be in effect for the first three months that the site is open. The site is scheduled to launch Monday, April 4.

Advertisements will be listed under four different categories: positions available; positions desired; rent/own space; and vendor services. Bar Association members can purchase ads and place them in any category. The ads will run for 30 days. The "positions available" category is for law firms or companies that have vacancies that need to be filled. "Positions desired" is for attorneys looking for a specific job situation, whether it be full-time work, part-time work, contract work or anything else. "Rent/own space" is the classified section's real estate listings where you can advertise available office space. "Vendor services" is the location where court reporters, expert witnesses and other non-lawyer professionals can offer their services to Bar Association members.

To post an advertisement, Bar Association members should go to classifieds.philadelphiabar.org. Once there, you will be asked to either log in or create an account. Next, you create the ad by choosing a category and creating a headline for it. Advertisers can then add descriptions, qualifications and contact information. You can then review the posting before paying the introductory $39 fee. Once you confirm the order and submit the listing, the ad will instantly appear on the website. A confirmation will appear and a copy of the receipt will be e-mailed to you.

Attorneys who are not members of the Philadelphia Bar Association will be able to browse the titles of listings, but will not be able to see the entire listing without becoming a member of the Association.

Brehon St. Patrick's Day Party March 14

The Brehon Law Society will hold its annual St. Patrick's Day Party on Monday, March 14 from 5:30 8:30 p.m. at McGillin’s Olde Ale House on 1310 Drury St.

As is our custom, the Brehon Law Society invites local state and federal judges as our guests for the event. All members of the Bar are welcome. The cost is $30 and includes an open bar, hearty appetizer buffet, and Irish music.

The Hispanic Bar Association of Pennsylvania will recognize Pedro Ramo for his dedication to the Latino community by awarding him the 10th annual La Justicia Award on Thursday, March 24 at 5:30 p.m. at Dechert LLP, Cira Centre, 2929 Arch Street, Philadelphia.

The Hispanic Bar Association of Pennsylvania (HBA) is a professional organization that is committed to the social, economic, professional, and educational advancement of Hispanic attorneys and the Hispanic community. The HBA's La Justicia Award recognizes individuals with a longstanding commitment to the advancement of the Latino community and who exemplify those qualities of the human spirit to which we should all aspire.
